Guys this guy is only around to get topics going. Besides he doesnt do 1 rep maxes. He goes for reps and and calculates how many total pounds he does and figures out how strong he is by this method.

No offense really Alex but you dont even knwo how to C/J and plus you learned by watching rocky 4? And your goal is 500lbs? Dude i really wanna know how big are you? Height , weight, BF%. Just curious cause the other boards do need topic starters but this board does not. We all knwo each other here and most truly compete. Often. This site is building a rep for being a truly informative powerlifting forum. Dont post here if your not serious. Please, dont waste this boards time. If you rserious fine, but if not go back to the training board.

Sorry again to be so blunt but i have seen your posts on the other forum and they are not serious at all.

If you wanna knwo the clean n jerk for real. Get in touch with ariorch on this board and he will help you. The guys on here also compete in school with this movement so you will get teh help you need. BUt like all lift sset your goals to be realistic. Set it on 300 for now. Then you will wont be so down when your clean n jerking 5 years from now and your no where near 500 yet. Thats liek bencing over 700 lbs. Its possible...but not a good goal for a person just learning. Good luck!

JAY's right dude its all about form and i'm one of them that compete for high school and I can tell you one thing don't think that by doing say 135 10 times then you think you can calculate your 1RM on this movement. It doesn't work that way you can probably do 135 10 times and not even get 165 once if you don't clean the weight right. Most people just starting end up reverse curlin the weight and if you compete for this movement, like myself, the judge will say NO LIFT even though you got the weight up.

Practice is key actually. Keep your reps low...1-3 reps.

Press out is a technical infraction. The bar needs to be locked firmly overhead during the jerk before the feet are fully planted. If the arms keep extending after the feet are planted: red lights.

I have the same problem when racking. I have to move my hands out some and then turn my elbows in more. It is hard to explain. What you should do is experiment with the bar in the racked postion, and move your hands out, then your elbows in. IMNSHO, the bar should be resting on the deltoids, not your hands.

And Alex, good luck with the 500 clean and jerk. If you do very well, you can expect to accomplish it in 7 - 10 years, assuming everything else is piss-perfect.

I was a national level OL'er, and I started under a very good coach from day one, which is an advantage most people do not have. I also can pull the hell out of anything. It still took quite a few years before I was competing on the national level. Oddly enough, about 8.5. OL'ing is a sport, first and formost, and the process of attaining sports mastery is a long, complicated process involving pain, sacrific, and dedication, the same as any other power sport. However, it is also the most technically demanding, and this is the most overlooked aspect. Be patient.

thanks much for the advice guys -

Arioch, I was doing what you suggested last night. I loaded up the bar on the rack to where I can't move it and got in the racked position underneath. I tried different arm angles, found a position a little better, hands further apart, but it still forces my wrists into extreme angles. but I'll keep trying...

I neglected to mention flexibility in the hands. This is actually a problem for me, and I must stretch them constantly, as well as my wrists, when performing cleans. Be patient.

Also, you can slightly adjust your grip after racking the clean prior to jerking it. Several athletes with poor flexibilty but very good power have done this. Like Patera.
