Heartrate shmartrate: are we using the wrong barometer for exertion/calorie expenditure?

IMHO, yes. But, unless we want to spend every workout hooked up to a mask and get a blood test before and after.... use heartrate. The argument is really flawed; base the 65% on normal (unstimulated) resting heartrate.

That neither negates nor answers the question.

I long ago forgone the "fat burning zone" as bunk. It still amzes me, we go in and lift weights, manipulate a diet that takes a math whiz to figure out, and yet so many can't figure out this cardio thing.

The bottom line is just do it! If you feel like being intense and doing some energy expenditure stuff like HIIT, then do that, if you feel like doing some low intensity long duration, then do that.

It does not matter, energy expenditure vs. intake of energy is what will do it in the end. I really truly think bodybuilders love to be miserable, and think they have to do the most miserable things to lose fat.

I have read all that EPOC stuff too...and not buying it either. In fact, one of the places I read that was in that rag mag Natural Fitness I believe it was, turns out the whole dam magazine is basically a large add for Muscle Tech.

PSHAW!

I got my epoc info from a trainer for the US Olympic Cycling... who may very well be a very well intentioned but totally misguided crackhead. You, me, everone, their brother: do what works, experiment, find the groovuliciousness of your own 'zone'.

Does that quench my interest in the science behind it? I know what works for me, i know what works for my clients thus far, and yet i still like to learn by asking. One of these days someone will know... then i will know and be able to help others with a more convincing and effective stand than 'just do what works for you'.

I thirst. I will search for water.

Yeah, Poliquin is one of the most sought after and well known trainers in the world. Have you read any of his stuff lately? He has gone off the proverbial deep end.

These guys have to keep coming up with stuff to be relevant.

Have you thought maybe you are overthinking this whole thing?

How much more convincing can you get than what works for you! Fat burning zone....its all about diet. Don't think so? Then I thirst for knowlege as you do, I want to know how so many bodybuiders I have competed with and against do absolutely no cardio and come in ripped. I in fact if it were not for my legs, I could do the same. My upper body gets very ripped with virtually no cardio, but I have to do cardio to "dial in" my legs.(this in my research leads me to estrogen issues)

I thirst. I will search for water.

As I mentioned, I too thirst for knowlege, but I have found that many times the thirst leads us to overanalyzing, and thus becomes actually detrimental. It shouldn't take a science project to do this stuff.

Yah, well... fine.. :D

Obsessive compulsive? Yes, thank you. Over-cerebralitis? Yah, it's terminal, i'm afraid, attaches itself to pretty much everything i do like a ramora.

I suppose what i really need involves smelling a few roses.

You are a smart guy Ghede, and I for one am glad to have you on the board. You make great posts, and your "thirst for knowlege" sounds equal to mine.

I have in fact already learned from you. :)

Props to you bro!
