Personally, I prefer elliptical machines. No impact and yet I still get my heart rate high without killing myself (or my legs, as in the stationary bike).
 
I also like the low impact of the elliptical, however, I think that actual running is much beter for you. The problem is that since I don't do actual running that often, when I do, it sucks. I can easily do 45 mins + on the elliptical, but burn out quick on actual turf, my legs also feel the hard impact 'casue they're not used ot it.
 
I hate all cardio, but if I had to pick one I'd go for the elliptical....
 
Running is definitely NOT a good form of fat burning cardio.
Don't know if that was what your question about cardio was in regards to, but running is horrid, also very bad on the knees. Later in life you'll see what I mean.

I run/walk on an inclined treadmill as a HIT routine....best results I've even gotten......kinda kills that theory, as I'm def. not genetically gifted...........

I for one don't like running that much, but I'm in the military, so I don't have much of a choice... I still avoid it like the plague, though...
