I go up and hold for two seconds, then back down. Its strange when people use their legs for this movement.

Hehehe....see the same people doing standing heavy
"back" curls. (I always thought curls were for biceps.)

As for the shrugs, I do about the same. Hold at the top with a good squeeze. (NO roll)

Rolling is a good thing if you want a rotator cuff injury. If not, never roll at all. Straight up and down.

Exactly bro. It is no more effective, and can really dick up your shoulders.

I am amazed at how the general public is ignorant to this, yet it seems so common knowledge on this board.

I can't tell you how many people have "suggested" that I "Make sure I roll my shoulders" when doing shrugs.

Joker

Just say NO! to rolling:D

The stupid idea of rolling your shoulders is to seek some additional static middle trap/rhomboid stimulation, at the expense of your rotator cuffs, not worth it!

If you want to hit the romboids hard, lie on your belly on a 60 degrees incline bench, let your arms hang down and do shrugs from that position....

Maybe this thread should be a sticky, or we should make a General INJURIES and DANGEROUS PRACTICE FAQ for new people...

Definitely ROLL your shoulders if you want to BREAK/DISLOCATE/INJURE your rotator cuffs.

Besides, think about it...when someone asks you a question, and you don't know the answer you simply shrug you shoulders UP & DOWN.

No one "naturally" shrugs w/roll. <--This is how I got my friend to start doing shrugs correctly.

I guess I'm one of those asses you guys laugh at.

Please don't flame me, but when I lift I roll. I naturally have big traps so I generally don't have to do shrugs, I just let all the other exercises do it for me. I guess that's why I read things here, to learn and apply it to my training. I'll know better next time I do shrugs.
