how about holding dumbells to your sides, or dumbells in front? Alot of people do and say to the sides, but ive seen many articles where bodybuilders say keep them in front. What do you guys think?

peace

ok...
I used to do dumbell shrugs like so...
I don't exactly roll... but I concentrate on lifting in front, and then alternate by lifting more towards the back... (this is hard to explain)
so it's not a roll... but it's one rep holding the dumbells back further, and one rep holding them more towards the front....
Is this also bad? worthless?
I only did it to try to work all the traps... for some reason I have a hard time working the middle of my traps, below the back of my neck... (this method didn't work either!)

don't roll because the tendens in your shoulders tend to go in the direction that they are not used to and if you do that then later in life your you have a great possibilty of having major shoulder pains. I don't recommend it at all. THis is what i have heard from all the older guys at my gym.:D

I lean forward a little, and pull my traps more backwards (since I am leaning, it is straight up and down). That seems to hit the middle in the back of the neck. 3 sets of regulars, and 3 sets of this.

Straight up and straight down is the way.

Bodybuilders love making exercises more difficult and intricate than they should be.
