I'm just wondering, Me and my friends get in this argument all the time, When you're doing Dumbell shrugs, or barbell shrugs... is it better to roll your sholders or to just keep with a straight up and down motion???

Thanks,
ROCK

I am not very knowledgable on this, but i was always told by guys i lift with not to roll. not sure why. I do know that for me deadlift and cleans put size on my traps.

Don't roll bro. Think about it, You're standing vertically. How will it do you any good for the weight to move horizontally?

Thaibox is right, you need to lift the weight against gravity. Rolling the shoulders doesn't do a thing, just stick to going up and down.

As they are a contracted position exercise - the answer is no.

I'll jump on the bandwagon here, the function of the traps is simply to pull the shoulders up and down, that's it, rolling is not only unnecessary but is a great set up for injury

Exactly that.

Train your muscles according to their functions or risk injury.
