DAMN you guys were right!!! My back is KILLING me (in a good way). I did 3 sets of 7 @ 185 ... but it sounds like that is way to much(reps). I'll move 'er up to 205 and do way fewer reps.

I may not be able to stand tomorrow.

Actually when you are going heavy, even high rep sets are effectively a string of closely-spaced singles. This is because the eccentric portion of the exercise is very different from the concentric movement. So for everything but the lightest warm-up sets, you have to re-set for every rep, making it a single.

I do sets of 12, 12, 5-10, 1-10 and it works fine for me.

I found heavy sets of 5 were great for building mass and strength, but low enough reps that I could still maintain my form

I also just started doing deadlifts about 2 weeks ago. I'm doing 2 sets of 6 singles (1 second break between reps) at 205. The first time I did them I did 3 sets of 6 singles at 135(hey... it was my first time in 5 years of lifting doing them). Both times my back has absolutely been throbbing the next day in a good way, and my hams are so sore I have to walk like a cowboy. Next week I think I'm going to try doing 225lbs.

Hey Needsize, where in Canada are you from? I'm from BC...

DrBones, I'm in ON

Me too! Nothing gets me more pumped up then doing some heavy deadlifts!

The deadlift is my best friend in lifting... becuz it hurts so nicely.
Squats for instance hurt in a way that sucks. Deadlifts hurt too but they just make me feel all masochistic and love it.

also the dead is the only lift for me that progresses steadily... unlike bench and squat which often plateau or even go down for a while.
