stop buying it (EVERYTHING) in a can :)
canned is not really that bad just watch the sodium levels and hidden sugars
if buying tuna buy it packed in water or olive oil if you need good fats
never canned ham, turkey or chicken
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much sodium besides you can't be sure what part of the animal it comes from
where with the fish (albeit it there might be bones in salmon mackerel and sardines) it is pretty easy to see what part of the fish it is from as most are whole

I wish, four kids to feed, and on the go NOT going to happen.
Though chicken is bought fresh. :)
go to walmart or costco and buy the large industrial size cans of tuna
you can drain it and freeze what you don't use right away
or get to know a restaurant owner
most have accounts at "cash and carries"
stores where they can shop or get things in a pinch at wholesale prices instead of paying retail
mind you these are can and pack sizes you won't be familiar with
such as a number 10 can which is a 100 ounce can ( i am still not used to metric sorry) but it is bigass can
tuna usually comes in four pound tin
i think that might feed you for a few more days
go to farmers markets if there is one there
lots of fresh veggies and fruits at great prices
most nutious way to feed your kids plus they can think of it as a field trip
or go alone and enjoy the time out lol

-I do the bulked canned tuna already, I will stay away from the canned turkey, ham (damn spam, jk) (though just bought some)
-I used to go the farmers market, kids just love it, but I buy more than just food so hubby doesn't LOL but I just moved, should see if there is one here, should be in a small town you would think?
-I just realized I jacked somebody elses thread, oops, sorry but too much good info here :)

no actually i jacked it
lol sorta a forte
in small towns there is a farmers market at least on the weekends
but small towns has upsides you can get to know the farmers
and ya know
that can be lots of fun some strawberry time or pumpking picking time
and some if you help them abit at harvesting time (kids can get a kick out of that too) some send you home with arms full of food for free most times

jpt thanks for the k
sorry i jacked your thread
the rice cakes are a fun snack once in a while
my point is don't make them a everyday staple

do that already too, love small towns for that. going to check the local paper now for the market! If not I will be off to the city on the weekend for theirs! So what is your take on deer and other wild meat while I have you here!

freakingA
my first full day off in 6 weeks and i spend most of it here
as i like wild meats to consume beware some you may think is wild is actually farmed
most 'wild' foods are actually lower in fat than farmed or generic meats ie chicken beer pork etc.....
my fave is actually wild boar, phesant, wild duck and goat
but i love stronger flavoured meats
deer is another stronger flavoured and the choice cuts can be used like regular meats but the rest must be slow cooked for a long time or tenderized (red wine)
i have no problems with them at all other than cost being prohibitive
unless you or a friend hunts
