deadlifts (again)

i read arioch's essay on the deadlift, but am still confused.

i'm really scared of hurting my back when doing deads, so i'm using very small weights (um, 10 lbs...go ahead and laugh :D), and i'm not really feeling it working any muscles. should i increase the weight? i was told that i should be lifting the heaviest weight for me, in order to feel anthing. is this true?

and is the proper form for a deadlift essentially a curved back but shoulders back, with bent knees?

and would i really suffer if i cut deads out of my workout?

any help would be appreciated :)

Thats a video of BFold that he posted up a couple of days ago. I think that watching videos really help put it into persepective, and who better to watch then B! Needsize used to have a video up of him pulling well over 500lbs for reps. I dont know if that video is still floating around anywhere but it is another one to look at to help visually show what you are reading about.
 
The reason you aren't feeling it is because you're using 10lbs....but I'm not laughing, I understand your concern......watch that video in the previous post and relax, once you gain the confidence in yourself, you'll be a deadlifting freak......trust me, when performed correctly, deadlifts are one of the most rewarding exercises in the book, the gains, physically and mentally are well worth the effort of including such a grueling lift in your routine, so don't get discouraged and scrap them, just be patient, watch, read, watch, then read somemore, then watch somemore, the confidence in your form and style will come, then the weight will, then the results will.
 
bigbootydaddy hit it on the head. deads are so awesome i couldnt imagine not doing them. definitely keep them in your program. find a knowledgable trainer at oyur gym and have them critique your form...but beware, not all trainers are experts.

obviously 10 lbs was too light, would you be able to suggest a weight that would be more appropriate? and how would i increase the weight? weekly/every two weeks/few weeks?
 
how many reps were you getting with the 10lbs? Id suggest putting a plate on each side and starting from there. For most people a plate is no problem. Then adjust accordingly
 
I did deads last week for the first time and was able to put up 225 for 4 reps (watching form very strictly).

I would take the advice of 1 plate each side and go from there.

BTW, I have had back problems too.
