Deadlift Problem-Can anybody help out?

Went to the gym tonite and did reverse green band deadlifts. We had the bands choked at about eye level hanging down. All was going smooth till the end. Worked up 90lbs each set. 495 flew up, 585 went smooth,...then it went to shit. 605 was my previous max on this, and seeing as how my training has been going good I thought I would give 635 a ride. I didnt even budge it at first. I then stepped back said a few choice words, and pulled it maybe a whopping 4 inches up.

I can usually pull 485-525 off blocks, and have my arch back gm's around 405x3. So wouldnt it make sense that I nail this? I usually blow the weight up to at least knee level.

I will admit that I've had a less than perfect day, and on top of that my good belt was off in my wifes car, so i had to use one of the gyms flimsy things.Maybe I should just write this off as a bad day!

Any suggestions on the start of the dead(thats usually where I smoke it from, thats why Im so spun).

Please let me know if theres still hope for me, as my dead is the only lift I really take pride in.

Like you said...could just be an off day. However, my expereience with these has been that you need to take accomodation and reflex into consideration. The weight is easier off the floor, as the bands help more at the bottom and less at the top. So I have found that the weight I perceive to need to pull off the floor becomes SLAP IN THE FACE hard about 4-6 inches up, as the resistance increases. If I had PERCEIVED that weight at the floor, I probably would've been tighter and recruited more natural reflex from the get-go. It tricks you...and then kicks you in the ass.

You'll get it next time. :)

the deadlift is a funny beast. have you been doing a lot of ME pull exercises lately? maybe you are overtrained on this. i see a lot of good lifters doing speed deads now. see ano's site.

my deadlift is my shittiest lift but it seems to move more the less i take ME pulling exercises. this theory is about to be put to the test this weekend as i am going to a meet and haven't pulled off the floor heavy since my last one 5 weeks ago.

i also listen to myself. if i am having a crappy few warmups, i just take my tired ass to the hyper machine cause i know it doesnt pay for me to personally try and hump it out on this particular exercise.

take care.

Spatts- I agree with the not being tight enough spill. I hate to make excuses, but not having my belt there really f'd with my lift. Im partial to my lever belt, as to being somewhat of a fat boy, I have trouble getting flimsy buckle belts to do me any good.

Irish-I agree with you on not doing a full pull everyweek. I only pull(rack, block, rev. bands or otherwise) every 3 or 4th week.--Now i am pretty religous about 1/2 deads for high reps pretty often. I feel that this hits my glutes and hams HARD, and as I have trouble finishing the dead. I think it exhausts the strong muscles and hits my weak ones. I remember reading that the westsiders were using timed Gms for the same principal. Whats you two cents on this theory?

Also, If Im not going to Full Dl that often, What is something I could rotate in besides all the variations of Gm's. World's Strongest Man competitor Whit Baskin is from my area, and he used to be a disciple of hyperextension(the old school kind) with enourmous weights on a bar behind your head. Do you know of anyone else past or present that was into this?

Lemme know what you guys(and girls-sorry Spatts) think on this Idea. If the floor really has become my sticking point, I need to have ideas already to fix it!

Speed deads off boxes, and anything to boost your hips, like alternating with sumos. Reverse hypers will bring up a dead fast too. So many things...

I heard wearing a squat suit backwards can help your dead in competition.... dunno if thats true or not.

VDOP...a good variation of the GM, if you have access to it, is to do chain suspended gm's with a safety squat bar, feet in your deadlift stance...with the bar suspended at 32-34".

i am the WRONG person to give advice on the deadlift so i will just sit back and listen to others.

however, billy mimnaugh has taken his deadlift from lows 6s to 771 using Westside methods. His journals are now being updated regularly on my site.

Maybe you should watch his progress as he prepares for the next meet.
