As a general rule, the narrower your stance, as well as the more upright you are, exposes the patella tendon to more stress, simply because it is harder to recruit the hamstrings in this manner. With a little more lean, as well as a wider stance, the activation of the hamstring is greater, and one of the functions of the hamstring is to protect the patella tendon during flexion of the quadriceps through co-contraction.
