Changing Weather = Joint Pain?

Hello my fellow trainers,

It seems that the weather is starting to slightly change. Lately my joint pain has been flaring up. . .particularly in my elbows. Right now, I am taking 1500mg of glucosamine and 1200mg of chondroitin per day and I am starting to increase my fat intake. If I had the funds to purchase flaxseed oil. . .I would. The pain has forced me to train with moderate weights. . . especially my arms. when I train my torso muscle groups, I don't have much of a problem. Has anyone else experienced increasing pain in the joints? If so, what are your methods of getting rid of the pain?

I don't know your age, if you are younger, just applying some liberal amounts of an icy/hot type product before you train to get some extra blood in there may help, but you will get some flack if you go to a public gym. if you are older, 30-35+, you may just have to decrease your workload. I train much lighter than a few years ago, but have as much muscle mass. One of the few benefits of being a little older.

Louden_swain, I hear you bro, I'm 25 but my joints feel like an old mans. My wrists, elbows and knees have been giving me lots of problems lately. Luckily my shoulders are still good.

Wraps help a bit, by keeping the area warm. LOTS and I mean LOTS of warm ups also help. For squats, I need to do about 4-5 sets of light leg presses, before my knees are warmed up enough for squats. For elbows I need to do lots of cable pressdowns, before I can go over and do the heavy skullcrushers. However, the only real way to fix the area, is to not work it hard for a long period of time.

How has the glucosamine been working? have you noticed any improvement? I havne't tried it myself, but I'm thinking about it.

Haz,

I think we are hurting because the weather is changing. Fall and winter are coming, as cooler temperatures are on the way. During the winter months I train in sweats to keep my entire body warm. In the past, I have had some problems with my wrist and sternum. My lower body does well even with heavy weights. However, my right hip was popping about a year ago. I do the same thing as you by including several light sets to get my joints warmed up. Cable press-downs are excellent for promoting blood flow in the elbows. Leg Presses also are good for warming up the knees. Right now, I wear fabric sleaves around both elbows to trap heat around the joint. To begin with, I have small joints with well developed muscle bellies. I am sure this causes a problem.

If you are hurting. . .purchase glucosamine/chondtroitin and flaxseed oil. This stuff is great for maintaining joint health. I have had some good results, but recently I have had to purchase the tripple strength. You can purchase a bottle of glucosamine/chondroitin for about $20. It is worth it!

I have a buddy who is a powerlifter and he is having problems with his shoulder and sometimes his elbows. He thinks I have swollen bicep and tricep tendons.

I wish you luck and don't forget to make your purchase of glucosamine/chondroitin!! :D

I hear ya Louden. 29 with the joints of a dead man.

I too also get joint pain when the seasons change. I've backed off from the heavy stuff for some time now. I'm going for longevity in the sport now, i could care less about the heavy stuff.

my friends call me "old man" because I always grunt when trying to stand up from a kneeling, sitting position. I also walk with an old man limp, sometimes. when it is cold out, my joints freeze up and limit my range of motion, very obvious when I walk.

this is all from my time in the Marines though, as I have been working out serious for a year now..
