I ran for half an hour yesterday and today my calfs are stiff as hell. They don't hurt, they are just stiff and always flexed. Is this normal? I never had this happen to me before, but then again I never actually ran I always sprint.

I did stretch my calves, I stretch out my entire legs for 5 minutes before sprinting or running. My mother had a calf condition where her calves would gain a ton of muscle and she would always complain how they were always stiff, she has like no blood in her calves nether, a doctor had to stick a needle in there 14 times to draw blood. Could I have perhaps gotten this condition from her? (not that I should complain about it - her calves are huge and she does not lift weights what so ever)

stretch minimal before you run. after you run, stretch deeply and hydrate, obviously. after you run you should walk at a fast pace bringing it down to a slow walk for ten minutes. I have heard while stretching afterwards, it is good to elevte your legs above your head (as if you were laying on your back) so the blood doesn't rush to your calves, or legs for that matter, possibly causing cramps... just my two cents

maybe you don't get enough magnesium or potassium in your diet/supplements? i've had people get cramps in their calves like that, and they were deficient in that. or possibly your calves are just very sore because you're not used to running for an extended period of time - i remember the first time i did sprints, after having only done inclie walking, my calves were killing me.
