BF Calculator

i dont know how many have seen this.... http://www.stevenscreek.com/goodies/pi.shtml
you enter your height and weight + waist measurement and it gives you a rough estimate of BF %. it actually gives 2 estimates ... one is the good old BMI which is best ignored and the other takes into account waist size. anyone who has measured their BF% more accurately recently, plz come up and test it out and let us know how accurate it is.

With my measurements in there it says I am at 18.8% which I think isa little low as my gut is huge. But going by the weight of fat I am 35.5lbs it seems to be roughly accurate as I was 155- 160 before I started to gain a lot of fat (before I started working out). I am 188 now.

I would love to know my actual body fat but my gym doesn't do the measurements.

Cool, finally a decent fat calculator. Most of them jst take weight and height and spit out a %bodyfat. If you are muscular, you get a WAY high bodyfat number, like the first number up top that this link shows. I have 13.5% bodyfat according to that number that incorperates waist size, but I have over 30% bodyfat according to the one that doesn't. I would estimate my bodyfat around 14%, so I think this calc is pretty good.

Estimate #1 based on height and weight
Your "Ponderal Index" is 11.93 which gives an estimated body fat of 35.1% (64.9 pounds of fat)

Estimate #2 based on waist size and weight
Estimated body fat of 12.6% (23.4 pounds of fat)

I'm around 14% based on the accu-measure calipers. I'd say the 2nd estimate is pretty darn close. At least for me.

Well... maybe this calculator estimates works for males only, because I got these:

Estimate #1 based on height and weight
Your "Ponderal Index" is 13.01 which gives an estimated body fat of 13.3% (17.1 pounds of fat)

Estimate #2 based on waist size and weight
Estimated body fat of -4.9% (-6.3 pounds of fat)

Could you imagine having -4.9% body fat?? I would be pure muscle!

yeah for girls or very small men this does not work as it says my brother has -9% bf however it is pretty acurate for me at 11% bf however its always a little to low

What exactly is "waist" size? It appears that due to recent fatloss, loose skin is making my fat "sag", so the measurement around my navel is 32.5-33" while the smallest point of my torso (about 1/2 way b/w navel and ribs in the front) is 30.5-31". This makes a huge difference, putting me anywhere from 8.6-14.7%.

Also, I'm not getting consistent #s with calipers either. I have the accu-measure 3000 calipers, which measure just above the hipbone and use a manual sliderule + chart, but my readings vary from 9-12 mm, putting me anywhere from 9.5-13.6%. I also bought the accu-measure fat track II digital calipers, which measure at mid-chest, an inch to the side of the navel, and mid-thigh, and my readings vary from 8s-9s.

It's difficult to tell from appearance as well. As I mentioned, I have excessive loose skin, so I can see my ribs and upper abs, but have a "pooch" below the navel. The lighting also makes a huge difference. When I look in my bathroom mirror I only see like a "silhouette" of my abs, but in the gym locker room under the fluorescent lighting I can clearly see distinct sections of my abdominals. OH, and when I sit down my friggin stomach still hangs over my pants! (unless I pull them over the blob of skin/fat)

I'm just going to have to get hydrostatically tested, aren't I?

But yeah, back to my original question, where do you measure your waist?
