absorbtion of protein/ weight gainers

BiG n Natural

New member
im eating 4 solid meals a day plus 3 prolab N-Large 2 shakes. and a PM protein shake thats 40mgs casein

morning is an N-large shake mixed wit 2% milk
meal
meal
pre gym is mixed with water

post workout is mixed w/ water and 1/3 a serving of GNC weight gainer 2200.
meal
meal
PM shake

my question is do you absorb the majority of the shake? would 900 calories from a shake equal 900 calories of solid food if i ate the carbs/protein/fat content, or is some of the shake that we ingest just not broken down n passed through?

people have been telling me to eat more solid food, bt its easier to get the cals in like this

Liquid meals" normally(depending on how much fat and fiber is in them) will hasten gastric emptying.(emptying of food from the stomach)

The gastric emptying rate regulates the rate at which ingested food and fluids are delivered to the site of absorption in the small intestine and the extent to which they are modified by the gastric secretions.

Maintaining a large fluid volume in the stomach will promote emptying.

so wtf does that mean for my protein n carb absorbtion?

u still digest in ur small intestine correct? just a different pH for different enzymes to work

I have some better idea for you. Indead of sucking down all those carbs , why not eat the same calories in mct's (coconut) or unsaturated fats such as flax , oils , peanutes/soy (legume) , tree nuts , or some red meat.

Beware of eating the same thing time and time again which includes your brand of protein powder. Also a good bulker is whole eggs. Try to relplace some of the times you'd eat protein powder's with real food.

The problem with shakes is that in a fasted state they tend to get converted to carbs , so taking N Large II (which is actually my favoite weight gainer as well) is a good idea. I think a better idea is to mix a straight protein power with some sort of 100% (no fructose corn sweetener) fruit juice so you get the nutrition of bioflavanoids and vitamic C

In terms of digestion Anafit has ginger root which will help digestion of foods. Also betain hydrochloride will increase the acidity of your stomach and pepsin will help break down proteins. There's also nothing wrong acidophillus after the mean to create a better enviornment for digestion to occur.

How the food digests is an individual thing

The digestive enzymes bromelain , papain, and protease will also help break down proteins

I will try to clarify......

The rate of gastric emptying is strongly influenced by both volume and composition of gastric contents.

If there are no or little solids to grind and liquefy, when the fluid reaches the small intestine, no further processing is required before absorption and the rate of gastric emptying is very fast.

With whole food, contents must be liquefied and you would want the meal to be retained in the stomach long enough for pepsin and acid to get a good shot at digesting the protein. Chyme is created and should be allowed to empty in the small intestine slowly so as to not overload it.

Beginning to see a picture here? Typically a liquid meal and especially if you have many of them in your day, will be more devoid of fats/fiber as I mentioned, and thus hasten gastric emptying, so digestion of proteins is minimal.

Whole foods is always the better way to go. Hope that enlightens a bit. Did not mean to confuse you. Sorry.... :)

To answer your questions
You stomach is (well should) be full of hydrochloric acid. Some peoples have less while others have more. This acid is corrosive and is designed to break down foods. However some chemical bonds needs more then just acid to break , therefore we have enzymes that are used to break those bonds. Most of these enzymes only work in low ph enviornment. The enzyme bromelian works in both a acidic (low ph) in the stomach and an alkaline (high ph) enviornment in the intestines

Your intestines should be an alkaline enviornment. Some food such as simple sugars go directly into your blood stream. Other foods need more digestion. There should be good parasites (probiotics) in your intestines that take the partially digested food, eat it , and then spit out chemicals your body needs.
So yes, digestion does occur in the small intestine.

In reference to your ph questions. Aside from the stomach the rest of your body should be alkaline ( 4.5ph - 5.5ph ) or you probably have some serious health problems. This can be determined by putting a ph strip to your urine

One simple thing people can do to help thier digestion is to chew more. Chewing plus saliva also break down food.
