I caught the end of the World strongman finals today. First place squat was 821lb and first place deadlift was 969lb. The squat was on a Smith machine. These are the final though. Are you competitive with these yet?
The finals of the 2002 World's Strongest Man contest will not be till late September in Malaysia. They only show re runs on ESPN till the day after Christmas of that year...
The lifts that they are doing are all partials. They are also static events. A friend of mine did 1070 on the squat and another did 970 on the deadlift at the Pro Qualifier to see who went to the Worlds...neither of them made it this year.
Chad Smith is from Texas and Pat McGettigan is from Indiana. The 1070 was Chad's 2nd out of 5 attempts. That is all it took for him to win...so he stopped.
Static events are boring to watch...lots of people can stand still with a heavy weight...but not many can move with it. That is where a lot of powerlifters run into problems when they try to do strongman.
