ab exercises don't bring you a sixpack anyway. it is all in the diet.
How true, HOW TRUE!
Thank you for your kind compliment curling and I do not mind revealing my age at all. Unfortunately, in my line of work I HAVE TO LIE though. I am 34 years old and I have four little girls.
I NEVER had a washboard before kids and my body was "eh" at best. I always worked out (if you could call jumping around until you are about to pass out "working out") - didn't learn to appreciate the true power that comes from iron until the first time I walked into a sweaty, seedy bodybuilding SHITHOLE when I was about 19 yrs old. GOD, WAS I EMBARRASSED! Seeing all of those big sweaty guys, grunting and fucking heaving just busting out of their tanks.... wait a minute, now this sounds more like a Between the Sheets thread LOL! Anyways, I got tired of yo-yo bullshit and being soft. I wanted to have a bubble but and hamstrings, pecs and bis...and a back, always wanted a wide back (yes, I was ill at a very young age, hehehhee). But I did NOT get the "diet" part until MUCH LATER.... actually, not until about 2/3 years ago when I decided that I wanted to try and compete.... but I digress.
I was able to achieve a flat stomach even after 2 kids. It wasn't TOTALLY flat, my genetics gave me that soft little belly that some guys dig on a girl. I HATED IT! But the third DESTROYED ME. After the fourth I had so much loose skin that REGARDLESS of the fact that I was like 108# SOAKING WET (I am truly 5' 3 1/2") I couldn't hide it even in a one piece bathing suit. It would all bulge out from underneath. Thousands of situps and all the weighted ab work in the world WOULD NOT CORRECT THIS NEGATIVE EFFECT OF PREGNANCY.... not to mention the fact that there was a hyuge gap as the fascia (tissue that your muscles connect to) had been so stretched that there were MAJOR gaps between my abs.
So at the age of 30 at about 104# (had very low bf because I didn't eat all that much - BAD, BAD VERY BAD - and lifted and cario-ed like a nut... I couldn't figure out why my progess was so ssllllllooooww and I wasn't getting any stronger ....DUH!!!) I had an abdominoplasty = tummy tuck. The doc sutured up my abdominal wall and removed AN ENTIRE FOOT OF LOOSE SKIN from my abdomen. (Liposuction is also commonly done at this time, but I had such low bf that this was not necessary to provide dramatic results). Because I had tried for so long and worked so hard to "lose that pooch" (which I would NEVER have been able to) my abs were so tight and hard that the results were TRULY DRAMATIC to say the least. Yes, I had a FLAT stomach... but no sixpack!!!
My doc told me to be extremely careful with abdominal work. As a matter of fact she questioned my motives. I would NEVER have to do another situp again as long as I did not get fat..... Could you imagine that? She thought that I had rocks in my head because I was not satisfied to have a flat stomach - I WANTED A SIX PACK!!
Several months later I also had a mastopexy and implants (yes, ma titties are fake hehehehee) and it was about 1 1/2 years later that I wanted to try and get into competitive bodybuilding.
What can I say.... I am mental.
I got the six pack the old fashioned way - I EARNED IT. I simply ate better, did weighted ab work to grow the muscles (as you do with the rest of the muscles in your body) then I did cardio and altered my diet to have them show through.
Now it is almost a MUST to maintain the size and strength of my abs as they have permanent sutures in them, if the muscles atrophy too much then I run the risk of busting them (which already happened to me after a week on the couch when I got the flu REALLY BADLY about 3 years ago).
For growth, I feel it is enough to work your abs every other workout. Do two exersizes, 3/4 sets of each. For added intensity - superset the two. Try to do one weighted movement and then the other w/out. Once your abs are developed you only have to maintain them... I mean how big do you want them to be? For maintainance once every 5 days or so is enough.
