Whats a good all-around food to snack on?

I am not really looking to get big, just toned and put on 10-15 pounds of muscle. I like to eat a lot, all the time actually, and am looking for a good substitute for junk food. I usually just have a big bowl of oatmeal (1 cup oatmeal, 2 cups skim milk). I also like to eat lots of bread. Its cheap, tastes good when toasted and seems like a pretty clean food. But I have heard about bread and oatmeal having a lot of carbs, which are not good if you are trying to get toned and build muscle. Am I misinformed?

oatmeal is good it has a low GI. get rid of the bread. try snacking on some protein bars or P shakes, or some water. try this cook up a bunch of chiken breasts then cut them up into strips put them in a bowl in your fridge and snack on them when u please:D

A good snack food are pretzels, very healthy for ya. Try to eat chicken as much as possible though, especially if you are trying to gain some muscle. High protein is what you are looking for, 1.5-2g per pound of body weight. Another good snack is a protein shake, if I am craving a snack I usually just drink back a shake and get lots of protein and mixed with milk you get moderate carbs a little fat.

I disagree with diamonds. Carb are of PRIME importance during bulking. Secondly, protein. 1g per pound should suffice. Anything low gi throughout the day is good , and high gi post workout.

Stick to wheat/wholegrain at least. I snack on carrots and celery. Celery and peanut butter...yummy.

For fruit, apples have a relatively low GI.

And you mentioned that price was an issue ... apples are cheap!
