A one time friend of mine got hooked on oxycotins. It took jail and losing every one of his friends for him to clean up. It's a hard addiction to break and the willingness to stop must be there first.

i don't think calling the cops on him is a good idea at all, betrayal of trust and that system is a CRIMINAL system not a drug rehab system. It will only harden him more and get him connected with more people that will do him no good.

i hear situations like this everyday. and maybe one out of every 10 works out. it's like the battered women shelters. they'd be closed if they relied on one time visitors....

Plus, if you turned him in and he found out he may come after you in a harmful manner. Especially since you mentioned he was buying guns.

Sadly he has chosen his path. Only he can chose to stray off that path.

True, you never know for sure they have stopped or what other drugs they are using. They can very easily restart also.

My friend ended up committing himself to rehab, which was a good 1st step.

I haven't spoken to him in over a year so I don't know his current status.

my godchild, who is 18 now, is really bad off on drugs. My sister, who never calls me, just called crying. Telling me she does not know what to do. I feel like someone needs to do something before he ends up dead. I am thinking about calling the police and narc him out. Just so he can get some help. There is no one who could bond him out so he'd have to do time. fuck...I feel like I have to do something. He's gonna end up dead.

My sister went to the cops about my brother because not only was he using but he was selling too, nothing ever happened. He has yet to be caught...
I guess let him know how ya'll feel and that he will end up dying..Hopefully he will attempt to get some help.

I feel your pain, feisty.

My sister is an addict, and thankfully she's on the path to recovery. Things looked bleak for a while, though, and I have been looking after her six year old son for the last year. At her worst there was nothing we could have done to get through to her. The only thing I could do was make sure Connor was safe.

I don't share HT's bleakness, but I do share the overall sentiment. Do what you can to minimize the collateral damage, but don't do anything under the guise that you are "helping" the addict. The only one who can do that is themselves.
