Come on guys, don't be so anal

Diet sodas may not be the perfect beverage but it's not that bad

The detrimental effect are negligeable compared to regular sodas, alcohol, fast food and/or drugs

Actually diet soda has been linked to higher obesity rates than regular soda!

Check this out: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/06/13/health/webmd/main701408.shtml

The theory is that scientists believe the body thinks because the diet soda tastes sweet, that it should be consuming calories, but instead is getting nothing. So it compensates by causing you to eat more.

It's really interesting that drank diet soda (more than 2/day), the risk of becoming obese or overweight was 57% in this study. Regular soda drinkers had a 47% risk.

The authors claim significance, but without seeing the actual study in print, I cannot fully support it. We'll have to wait until it's published before we see the actual methods used.

I've read this article

It's 100% BS

and not applicable to us

Most of us know what we eat, how many calories, P/C/F etc
So, when we drink a diet soda we don't allow to eat a donut just because we 've "saved" a few calories with the diet soda

Anyway it's all about moderation : 2-3 cans of diet soda a day in summer won't kill you or make you fat

In the old days they were drinking beer and full fat milk
Do you think it's healthier than diet soda?

Diet SODA CAN'T MAKE YOU FAT----IT HAS ZERO CALORIES!!!!!!

THERE ISN'T ANY SUGAR IN DIET SODA, THERE IS ZERO CALORIES>>>THE SAME AS WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

H2O---calories=0
Diet Pop---cals=0

I still would love to know the answer to SWORDFISH'S QUESTION as I've heard this bull shit too and want to know what the evidence/reasoning is...

The chemicals in diet soda can certainly hinder your metabolism. You are correct in saying that you cannot gain fat directly from diet soda because it contains 0 calories. However, it may worsen your metabolic environment, indirectly causing ill effects, some of which are list above. I would try to avoid it although the effects of a can or two per week are probably fairly negligible.

Carbination effects o2 consumtion and should not be used when in training. Sprinters and runeers should avoid. Otherwise, I believe (IMHO) that carbonated sodas can be used in moderation

It is not the carbination of the product which you need to be concerned with, rather the following ingredients:

phosphoric acid
potassium sorbate
sodium benzoate
sodium citrate
ascorbic acid

In the majority of products, diet brands will have a higher caffeine content than the regular brand.

The caffeine will create an acidic condition in the stomach which may lead to GI problems with higher consumption over longer periods of time. The phosphoric acid will lower the pH value of your saliva and in order for your body to compensate for this, it pulls calcium from bone (including teeth) to act as a buffer. The potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate are used as preserving agents against yeasts and fungi. The sodium citrate is used to keep the acidity level of the drink lower than it otherwise would be. The ascorbic acid is used as an anti-oxidant.

Sodas or diet-sodas have no nutritional value whatsoever and any calories which they may contain are classed as 'empty' ones. It just doesn't make sense to pay for and consume a product which has the potential to remove more from your body than it delivers.

Stick to water.
