squat question

ive been squating for four years but this recently came to my attention. My bro tells me when he squats heavy and when he ascends he pushes the bar with his shoulders, whereas i just leave the weight of the bar on my traps and squat. I can squat heavier when i tried my brothers style. Which is more beneficial?

interesting - from a physics perspective, it seems that when u use your shoulders to lift the weight, the weight moves closer to the vertical line that goes through your centre of gravity. This would probably help reduce strain on the stabilizer muscles on your lower back, but your legs would be doing the same amount of work.

This is pure speculation, so please don't take my word.

neither is really more beneficial. either way you're still pushing the same amount of weight with your legs. It may seem easier because of what succesion said about center of gravity but your legs will still be doing the same amount of work. pm me for any other advice

Ummm, don't know the ins and out of why you can shit more weight one way, but . . .

When doing squats the bar MUST be below the cervical prominenz (think that's the spelling), C7 - the knobble at the back/base of the neck .... tip your head forward and you can feel it . . . .

Have the bar above that and you gonna HURT yourself . . .
