After reading Daeo's post I felt compelled to reply.
One of the reasons I'm reading this forum is to recover from aftereffects similar to what he described. I went to a doctor for a physical exam, got sent to a urologist after he felt a lump, and within two days went under the knife. Mine was malignant and I had to undergo a lot of treatment that left me in pretty bad shape. I didn't know how bad it was - I would go to work, trying to act like nothing happened, and collapse on the couch, where I would lay 'til I went to bed. I had a new 9 month old daughter who I didn't have the energy to play with. It wasn't until my strength started to return almost 9 months later, that I realized how badly I was affected.
Mine was not a little lump. It was as if one of my testicles had swelled up to almost double size. It was hard. It was cancer.
Over the last three years, I basically stopped all activities that were strenuous. I ballooned up in weight hideously. I'm an ex-jock, with a normal weight of around #210 at 6'. I was up to 310 lbs. My biggest activity was climbing stairs, and catching my breath. I had once ridden a bike 820 miles in 7 days in the Chilean Andes, now I couldn't walk up stairs.
I finally kicked myself in the ass and woke up. I got a new job, moved to Texas, and once established joined the gym. I looked at several and decided on Powerhouse - big men throwing around heavy weights - no chrome, no running tracks, no aerobics classes. It's been only about 9 weeks, but I can finally feel some strength returning. My first week, I couldn't last 7 minutes on a Glider, and I was benching #140. This week I'm doing the Glider 5 times a week for 30 minutes, and benched 2-45 plates each side for 10 reps. I'm feeling stronger, finally, and more fit, and the weight is just starting to come off. (Doing the ECA thing with 6 meals, heavy protein)
No one counciled me on fitness when I was undergoing radiation. I was told to eat because I wouldn't feel like it but needed the nutrition. Food had no taste for a year, but I ate because I was told to. I didn't lose weight, I put on 20 lbs the first 8 months, and 60 more in the next 3 years. I wish I had been working out. I wish a doctor might have prescribed test for me, or some AS to try to keep my muscle - it all atrophied.
Now - I'm finally back in the groove. I'm going to do what it takes - whatever- to get back to where I was. My BF readings indicate I have about 240# of Lean mass. For now I'm gonna work my ass off 4-5 days a week, eat right, and use natural supplements. As long as I'm dropping the weight steady, and adding weights to my workout stacks every week, I'll stick with that plan.
Guys, it's not a funny thing. Check yourself, see a doctor. One friend and one cousin avoided potentially serious problems by learning from me. I'm 40 now, and a little worried about my ability to build muscle and ramp up my metabolism; but for now I feel pretty damn good about my progress.
For now simple goals - 300 lb bench again, and 10% BF. For later - MASSIVE and RIPPED!
Expect to be looking for help here, in the not too distant future.
