Hey gang,

I need some help. Ive never lifted/worked out in my life, always been somehwhat active playing sports and riding. Well, for the last year or 2 Ive been working in corporate USA and eating like a slob. Its starting to show. Im 5'8" 160. Skinny build, but Im starting to get man boobs and a gut. Its actually showing now, so I need to get of my lazy ass and do something. I joined a gym, but what now? I know nothing about lifting/working out etc. I want to talk to someone about the best way to get rid of my damn fat and of course build muscle.

Whats the most effective plan? Is there a web site for rookies like me to get started? Please dont flame me, Im being honest and looking for some good advice, since this board seems to have tons of members who have this down to the science.

This is square 1 for me. I may not be anything now, but I want to change that and hopefully you guys can help me with advice. All of my friends are also slobs, so un fortunately I cant look to them for motivation. (yes, I realize I need to be my own motivation...yea yea) Guess Im not perfect.

Thanks!

First check with a trainer at your gym, they can help you set up a program based on your goals. Second stay away from the magazines, most are trying to sell you supplements, if you want to study something to get some ideas from try Arnold Schwarzenegger Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, as good as any source for finding the right workout or explaining what each exercise does for your body.
Good luck, stick with it and you will notice a difference in your attitude as well as your body.

the most effective plan is one that you will stick to... there are really any quick fixes, so go out there and make a lifestyle change... that'll involve changing all of the following

diet (5-6 smaller meals a day, lots of lean protein, clean carbs and healthy fats - do a search on the diet board, there are plenty of dieting info there

workout - just starting out, get a trainer, it'll probably be worth the money.. to speed up fat loss, lift moderately heavy weights to add muscle and boost your metabolism... there are lots of different exercise routines you can do, this board has plenty, or if you get a trainer, they'll work with you to get you on one

don't forget the cardio... 3-4 days a week to start (30-45 min and increase if that's easy)

sleep - get lots

as for websites there are plenty... just use a search engine...(i'm sure you can do that if you found your way here :) ) just gather information... here's a good diet site that i use (with a food database so you can track what it is you are eating)

www.cyberdiet.com

ummm basically, start slowly, learn how to do this all correctly, once you start seeing the results, you'll be hooked..

good luck

The only to lose fat is to do some sort of aeorbic exercise and modify your diet. I don't know how much about exercise you know so a trainer could help you get on track. As you learn the exercises and get your program formatted, you can lose the trainer. If you don't want to put the money into a trainer, go to the libaray and do some basic research. Read how to do the main lifts and what part of the body they isolate. Research what your daily caloric intake should be and subtract calories (and do cardio) to lose weight. I wrote on another "newbie" thread to also research the types of weight training (HIT, heavy volume, etc) and follow the one that makes sense to you (I personally believe in the high intensity training).
