Protein Bars

New member
Hello again guys

I normally buy 2 protein flapjacks/bars from my local health food shop.

Recently they have had a sale on, and a few lo-carb bars have been reduced.

I picked up a couple of the lo-carb bars and they taste great (peanut butter flavour mmm). These bars have the following nutrients.

248 kcals
23.4g protein
14.4g carbs
of which sugar 1,3g
12.1g fat
of which saturates 3.7g.

The bars i normally get are

287 kcals
18.8g protein
34.9g carbs
of which sugar 5g
7.1g fat
of which saturates 3g.

To me the lo-carb bar is better as it has lots more protein, less carbs and hardly any sugar.

The fat is higher, but with it being a peanut butter bar, im guessing it will be good fats.

Im just concerned that its packaged as a lo-carb barm, for atkins dieters i guess, rather than a high protein bar for bbers.

Am i right in thinking these bars are ok?

thanks

Paul

OK? No......maybe once a month or in a serious pinch.....ingredients are junk, protein is of very week biological value, i.e processed and cheap and the fillers will do nothing GOOD for you.......pass if you are serious.....

I would suggest avoiding bars, whether they be protein, low-carb, meal replacement, etc. as the nutritional content is for the most part not ideal. The ones you have mentioned might have peanut butter in them but I would expect that it would be listed far down on the ingredient list as just a flavouring agent so don't be mislead by that.

Protein bars did have a place in bodybuilder's sport bags when the powdered mixes available were only promising in the high teens to low twenties grams of protein. Now though these mixes are pushing the 60 gram threshold ... something the bars can't compete with. The bars are convenient but perhaps too convenient as they are high in fats (saturated) and sugars.

It may be less convenient for you but try to carry two sport bottles with you. One with water and the other with a powder mix so that you can meet your nutritional requirements.

Just picking a random powder you can see the benefits over bars:

NB Isopure low-carb (packets) 1.71 (US$) per serving

Calories 220
Fat 0g
Saturated Fat 0g
Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 450mg
Potassium 900mg
Carbohydrates 10g
Fiber 0g
Sugars 0g
Protein 42g

Your low-carb bar ... PRICE ??? (more than 1.71 probably)

Calories 248
Fat 12.1g
Saturated Fat 3.7g
Carbohydrates 14.4g
Sugars 1.3g
Protein 23.4g

i eat a bar or two a month, if I have to study for a test or go to work early...and i have no time to eat a meal, then I will have this, but just to "hold me over"

you gotta think what gives a bar its consistency: normally corn syrup or another high-fructose ingredient. It's difficult to manufacture a bar without the glue to hold it... I agree, if you want a bar, make your own, there are gazillions of recipes around. Google Maggie Wang (the girl has a blog with tons of recipes, besides, her transformation is amazing, she is now all buffed, plus she is a game developer, which is cool)

Wow, thanks guys

I didnt realise these were so bad for you!

Ill look into making my own, cos i work full time and really need the convenience of at least 1 or 2 bars per day.

Ill see what recipes are about and take it from there.

Thanks again

Paul

i use them as a cheat when i'm dieting. when i crave something sweet...i eat half of one with some skim milk.
