Patience with Stupidity

Sometimes I have a HARD time keeping my mouth shut! ARGH, is that just me?

Sorry to rant, just wondering if I'm the only one who really looses patience with moronic statments!

Overheard in the gym, trainer to man overweight by prob 40 lbs,
"Make sure you do your cardio *every time* you come in here, that's what's going to get the fat off, everytime - gotta do it."
----Hmm, this was someone NEW to fitness & can you say BURN OUT??? Why overdo it? Lifting's most important - cardio's important, just don't miss lifting!

In GNC, a man probably in mid 50's - seemed to not exercise also. Says to the clerk, "What's a good supplement/meal replacement shake?"
I wanted to say, "Bake chicken, hard boil eggs, brown rice & fruits & veggies & get out of here!"

& of course, My absolute FAV of fitness myths,
1. Women who don't want to lift cuz they want to be slim & not 'bulky'. (oh yea, I don't actually WORK & work HARD for this muscle!)
2. Won't all that muscle turn to fat if you stop lifting??

The grand daddy of Dumb statements:
3. Eating fat (like Peanut butter) makes you fat.

I have to say...some people at work have seen me at the gym lifting weights...and they are telling me...hey u r a women u should not be lifting so heavy...go light to tone.
Also they have told me that if I get muscles and I stop lifting all those muscles will turn into fat....
I just say ok...I will try no to stop..because even if I explain to them it would be a lost cause....
I mind my own bussiness and that is it..

I'm fighting this little myth every day with my girlfriend. :rolleyes:
 
I seem to be living a parallel life with Gladiola recently!!??!!

I was JUST about to post a thread regarding being impatient with uneducated people...I know about *thismuch* (interpretation - virtually nothing) and I am already getting frustrated with people...both in person and on this board...here's an example of 2 posts I have recently made:

"Wait a minute - why in the world are you asking about diet NOW - shouldn't you have had your diet in order BEFORE starting your cycle??"

AND

"I saw this flabby, big-tittied, bleach blonde, spandex-wearing idiot at the gym....."

I am now blasting people for doing the exact same thing I USED TO DO!!

I officially declare myself a hypocrite!! :rolleyes: New Years resolution: to be more patient with people and try to help as you have helped me. :D

We seem to be getting the flood of New Years Resolutioners coming in now. I feel sorry for the ones who look soooo lost...... but most will last a month or two......they are the ones who keep the gym owner in business . Bring em in, sign em up for a year, and then never see them again. I am always wondering what has happened to them?? And how in the world can they afford to lose money like that??

I guess you either have the drive or dont. Plain and Simple.

I suppose I should also state that as an aerobics instructor, also teaching at women-only clubs, I am very much exposed to the average female gym goer. Would be nice to work out at a gym surrounded by Elite ladies!

Forgot the add on to that myth: for those who *are* able to get big, it will happen overnight & all-of-a-sudden she'll have no neck & no feminity & won't be able to do anything about it! :lmao:

I think prevalent fitness myths also irritate me b/c I am **Supposed** to educate ppl! The owner of my gyms (world-wide fitness presenter) told me that should be part of my job: lead them through routines & give a safe, fun, effictive workout, but also educate. That's important to me too, so I don't want to shrug my shoulders & say, "Oh Well". But I definitely don't agree with approaching ppl on the gym floor with unsolicited advice - when they're in my class is a whole other issue though!
 
Gladiola - Just to illustrate how deeply ingrained the myths are, here's the IM conversation I had with my girlfriend this morning (by the way, John Bender is a reference to a character in The Breakfast Club):

John Bender says:
look at me and my workouts. Think about how hard I have to work to gain muscle and the amount of protein required. Plus, I have the benefit of abundant testosterone
John Bender says:
Lifting heavy (for you) weights with fewer reps will not get you bulky

it's just not possible

i pay no attention anymore...let them do it the way the want to ...and hear is best and see where it takes them!!
