Im no scientist, but I know that as my bench has gone up my ability to do lots of pushups has gone through the roof. I went from 5-8 in a set to 20 per set in a few months with no pushup training. Of course if I wanted to do the most pushups, training pushups would get me more reps.

Maybe you should try 5.5 reps? :)


Seriously there is no magic number. Generally most will agree that 3-5 range works well. The main thing is to keep progressing or adding weight to the bar every workout. Write it down so you know you are making progress and eat lots.

I personally like 5x5, but 4x6 is almost the same just less recovery time in between.

Although right now I'm sticking to the basic 3x3 because I'm a noob.

it is very simple, follow a 5x5 program of some kind(madcows 5x5, DoggCrapp training) and focus on strength and size will come with it, building muscle is all about forcing your body to adapt to the stress being brought upon it (ie bench pressing at 200 lb for 5 reps) and if you continue to bench press 200 lbs for 5 reps week after week and never increase the weight your body is not going to adapt(build more muscle) beyond the 200 lbs for 5 reps.
