my family is in a shit storm (grandpa having health issues)

Re: my family is in a shit storm

Honestly I wasn't that upset, just kind of WTF and needing to talk to someone about it who wasn't in my immediate life. Then Annie had to go and make a liar out of me calling it unique because she's had a similar occurance in her life ;)

I feel bad dangling things out there and letting it seem bigger than it is, so I'll give a vague recap - my grandfather had a quadruple bypass surgery on friday and since then things have been a rocky mess of health complications and revelations. It's the health part I was most upset about, but it was the revelations part I can't post about out of respect to my family.

Good news today though. For the first time since surgery the doctors have described him as "stable." He's unlikely to come off the ventilator before the weekend, but this is still positive progress.

Good to hear that it's getting better!

Sorry about Annie. Wait, is that the one on here? Whoa.

Re: my family is in a shit storm

he's still got a rather dangerous strain of pnuemonia to deal with, which is no small fry for an 81 year old, but his blood pressure has stabalized finally and he's getting oxygen to his blood. They are gonna wean him off the stuff keeping him sedated to see how his mental state is, praying he's calmer (last few times he's been confused and violent....upsetting to even picture).

Doctor made an amusing comment - "He's still a young guy....no more cholesterol, ok?"

They do this every morning( turn off sedation) and just bc he acts confused doesn't mean he had some sort of brain injury. Is he on a diprovan drip? Did u say he's vented? If so ask how long he's weening for and write down his latest arterial blood gas results and other lab results outside of normal range. I can help give u a no holds bard opinion if you'd like. Does he have CHF as well or any other organ failure? Either acute or chronic

The doctors thought the confusion was related to the low oxygen levels in his blood....he's still aggitated when they ease back on the sedation, but apparently was able to nod responses twice today when asked if he had any pain, which shows more mental lucidity than he's had since the surgery. He's on propofol? Don't know if I'm spelling it right. I recognized it as whatever michael jackson ODed on. The doctors expect to wean him off the vent by this weekend, but that will continue to depend on his aggitation levels when he's more awake. They sedated him again earlier tonight because of the aggitation (he was breathing fast....something was said about tachycardia? It's all latin to me. And apparently this is causing lower blood pressure, which also means nothing to me), so the cycle continues.

I'd actually love a real, flat out honest opinion from you on this, but I'm four hours from where all this is going on and I hesitate to ask my dad to send me that info....he's got enough to worry about at the moment between being at the hospital all day, and dealing with daily calls and texts from like 20 people. I very much appreciate the offer, though.

To answer your question, as far as I am aware no other organs are involved (beyond obviously his lungs with the pneumonia), and this is the first time he's had heart problems. He's actually been remarkably healthy for a man his age before all of this happened.
