Morons at the gym (the official thread)...

It's tough being image conscious and 140. You have to think about every exercise you do to be sure that in the occasional year that your body does gain an extra pound it grows the weight in perfect proportion. Once you hit 250, it's easy to hide an odd pound of asymetric growth.

Animal was my favorite muppet, I'd have done a double take if I saw him lifting in my gym for sure.

some people are in a world of their own apparently.. I can't count the number of times I've had people walk right next to me when I've been doing deadlifts. I always figured it was a wanna-be alpha male thing, kind of like 'I'll show him he's not so tough by invading his space when he lifts' but now I realize it's just clue-lessness.

ya, I can't stand when this happens. I've noticed that when ever I am doing standing military or deads there's some asshole that just has to stand right in the way of my movement. One day I'm going to just drop the weight on their foot.

true. whats saddest is this little fella from work I tried to train. I taught him to squat, how to deadlift, the correct way to bench and in a couple of weeks he made more progress than he had in months. There was a heavyweight big bastard bb in the gym who confirmed lifting heavy on the basics is the only way to go.. so he had it in stereo.

But of course, it wasn't enough work.. and he wanted to do things his way so now he does one arm reverse grip pushdowns and kickbacks to 'bring out the muscle', lots of cable work to bring out the upper pecs and won't do declines or heavy flat because he's worried at 140 he will get 'bulky' lower pecs and ruin his shape.

Haha, that is so true. Im training a guy; a friend, who keeps trying to tell me that he wants to bench on the smith machine because he 'feels it more' he tells me that we should do more bicep curls, that we should do more cardio (we are on a fecking bulk), we should go to the gym everyday, and we should do more stuff with dumbells, because 'they are better for you' and 'everyone else does them' and 'we are the only people in this gym that don't'. I tell him,

'everyone else in this gym does 15 sets of cable-cross overs supersetted with dumbell curls whilst doing situps, and anyway I don't trust you to spot me with dumbells any further then I can throw you.'

After 4 months of trying to teach him how to spot properly with a bar, and failing miserably, he thinks im going to let him near me with 50kg dumbells, not on your life.

I will teach him the ways of the 'elitefitness', the darkside will not take him... not while he trains with me it won't anyway!!! lol

Why do so many people not get a clue about bodybuilding. I know many people who are "trying" to get big, but no joke yesturday tiny buddy asks me half way through his bicep workout " hey, how do you stretch your bicep?" I just kinda walked away...

LOL i love just sitting between sets and wondering what the hell these people learned there shit from. I mean, we all know that the majority of lifters don't know there ear from there elbow, but you would think after watching them isolate biceps every freakin' day they would realise. And I'm by NO means a big guy, but I've just started, and my friends have seen the gains I make, yet they still seem to think "12-15 reps are best for bodybuilders" and " you have to KILL your muscle once a week" bullshit, im just sick and tired of people being so damn ignorant. Ahh, Ahh, Ahh...ahhh

After several months of doing power and hang cleans in my university gym, it seems several others (and by several I mean a dozen and a half) have decided to clean as well because they want huge lattimus pectoral trapezius muscles, too.

The only thing is, the form of all these people is downright absolutely tremendously horrific.

Imagine this: Stand up straight. Arms out to the side, elbows at shoulder height, letting your arms hang down (like a scarecrow). Now do a barbell reverse curl front raise (with a TUT tempo of 6-1-1)

That was it! You nailed the form perfectly!

My God these people

I really hate that, getting ready for a big pull especially and somebody walks right in front of you. One time I had my hands on the bar, took a deep breath...and some guy walks up and says 'are you going to use this? (pointing to a collar or something)

Another time I was squatting pretty heavy for me, I had the bar on my back and the janitor starts vacuuming inside the power rack and hits my foot. She looked at me like it was my fault, like 'watch where you step, idiot'

Instead of being a complete ass you could show him how. Or maybe it's that you yourself have no clue.

Stretching is very important when lifting, I stretch between every set almost all the time, especially when doing an isolation movement.

It might be interested to know that there was a study conducted by the fitness guys at Bath Rugby Union which has stated that direct stretching of a muscle in order to warm it up makes very, very little difference to the protection against injury and infact impares the ability of the muscle, as it does not perform to its full potential during the exercise of which the warm up is intended. As such Bath have removed much direct stretching from their warmup routines.

I can't vouch for the integrity of this study, nor can I find a direct source for it. I just remembered reading it when you were talking about stretching. It seemed to go against everything I've ever been told, its results were very interesting, even if I choose to remain a bit sceptical. lol

From my first thread:

So I was squatting today at the gym, and into my third set on the first rep while sticking out my butt I felt something rip/pop (I had headphones on) and could only assume that either my shorts, boxers, or both had split at my ass. I quickly racked the weight after completing that rep and reached around in back to check if my shorts had ripped, thankfully they hadn't, just my boxers had! There were like three or four other guys in the room and they acted like nothing had happened...

oh boy..

I'm not talking about warming it up, I'm talking about between working sets and after the workout.

most studdies are bull shit anyway, I read one studdy that said that stretching increases muscle growth. For every studdy there is a "counter studdy", lol.
