Lent....Yes already....What are you giving up??

does anyone actually stick with this whole lent thing? I had a g-friend who said that she was going to give up chocolate for lent once.... it lasted about three days. She was just like, oh well. and went on. Isn't this supposed to be a major catholic tradition or something? I know jack about it

Whiskey

You give up something that is stopping you from being closer to God.....Yes it is a Catholic tradition kind of thing....The whole lenten season you try to become closer to God.....which is where giving something up "bad" comes in...

And yes I stick to it and already went to church for ashes...and NO I will not debate religion on EF lol

I am giving up paying money to the hipocracy that is the modern day church, where they have the nerve to mandate how much you "donate".

Oh wait, I already did that. (but if you ask me I am still Catholic)

For those that don't realize it, for all the existing Christian denominations,
the Roman Catholic Church is the Mother Church of the entire Christian faith.

They all split off from the RC Church that started it all in a structured way.,

So one could say all old school Christian Doctrine has its roots there.
Some Christian denominations simply have choosen to either ignore, not practice or deny as valid many of the RC ideas and practices..

Actually, Martin Luther was the main playa in the split that formed the
Lutheran Methodist or Protestent faiths, splitting from the Catholic Church.

He felt that the RC church had too much power, and that your average joe could read the bible and learn without a priest or even at a church.

Basically, he brought the christian faith to the common man/woman and for this I think he was very important in how many religions do things today. And also its how I feel the original church was meant to be.

I was floored when my Mom at 80 yrs old told me that she had never read the bible, as she was raised Roman Catholic. Until recently, the catholic
priest would read to you from the bible what you were supposed to hear at church. No real pressure to read it and study it on your own.

I don't know if I would 100% agree...

However, you don't see many (in fact I have never seen any) catholics running around with bibles in their hand reading it 24/7 like some christian peeps.
