Lent....Yes already....What are you giving up??

I no longer subscribe to the hypocrisy & hatred of the Catholic church, so nothing....

No, I don't know of any protestant church that does the lent thing. I was raised Baptist, and it was not taught in our church and not recognized at all. We don't do the ashes on the head, no meat on fridays, or the sacrifice during lent. Are you Catholic? Have you even attended protestant churches to know?

Most mainstream Protestant churches in the US don't due the carnival/lent/ashes on the forehead, etc. In my United Methodist upbringing we definitely observed lent and Ash Wednesday, as well as Maunday Thursday and Easter Sunday, just not quite the same as Catholics.

Growing up in largely Hispanic west Texas, I was always strangely jealous of my Catholic friends who had to decide what to give up for lent.

Anglicans, Presbyterians and even Lutherans follow some of the same customs.

United Brethren/Methodists are real close to Catholics in traditions minus the Pope.

And most recognise Catholic Rome as the Mother Church. hence the profession of faith/apostles creed commentary about the catholic church.

I googled Baptist Lent and got a slew of data about celebrating Lent officially by many churches and others saying it was Pagan and a Sin.
I think the Southern Baptist Convention says no, but I'm not sure really,
as I bet they aren't either. Open to Biblical Interpretation IMO..

Whatever makes you feel intouch spiritually and adds value I always say.

A bit wordie heather, but you asked me. so here goes.

I already posted my insights both www and my own personal experiences over the years on the mixed views of Old School Catholic traditions within the various Protestant denominations.. As stated earlier, I am not a religious scholar or expert, but :

Raised a Catholic until I was 18 or so. Did all the standard sacraments required.
Baptism, Eucharist/communion, Reconciliation/confession, Confirmation

I had insight into the protestant faith being more interesting, engaging, open to moderate yet still biblical rules/concepts/theology, and started attending a Baptist church for a few years. My daughter was not baptised as an infant because I understood as they do that it should be a choice vs a baby thing.

We moved and started attending a Presbytarian church because it was close and I liked the pastor and people.

I got disgusted with the Presbytarian church's money grubbin ways due to them building too large of a new sancutary and we started attending a tiny
old United Methodist Church where I became a Lay Leader and was very active in the church leadership. Great great place.

Lastly we moved again across town, and now we attend a growing Non Denominational Christian church that is very Moderate, has great contemporary live music, a Surfing Ministry on Saturdays at the beach and does great works in the community.

FYI
Non Denominational Christian Churches are the largest growing segment of the Christian churches in the US.. Mostly due to people growing weary of centralized church governence and control vs local..
