Just tried good mornings for the first time tonight!

I did 4 sets, worked up to slow reps with a 70 # barbell. I used a curling barbell instead of an olympic size because I read in muscle & fitness hers that that was the one to use. I was just barely able to clean it up, but getting it over my head was almost impossible! Does anyone else have this problem? What do you do? Just use the olympic bar in the squat rack?

I use an olympic bar out of the rack to so speak. I don't know why anyone wouldn't.

I remember my first time doing them...I slowly walked back inside to the computer, messaged Hannibal...and told him that he was no longer myfriend. :lmao:

Hey, I did my first ones yesterday, too! I also used a barbell since I wasn't sure about the weight (I left the plates off until I get the form down).

I'm jealous that you could get 70 lbs. over your head. I don't know anything (obvious from my posts *sigh*) but I'd think it would be easier and safer for you to use the Olympic bar and rack like others suggested.

And, if anyone is interested, I did bent leg, arched back and went parallel to the ground. Is it okay to go lower? I also can do more weight, but after my ignomious squat experience thought I'd save upping the weight until next time.

 Au Contrare, My dear. If you've been reading on Elite, even if you've only retained half of it - you know a lot more than the average gym-goer! :D

My former lifting coach taught me to keep my arch, & go only to about 45 degrees. That felt most comfortable - Feet are shoulder width & knees just slightly bent.

I also use an olympic bar out of the rack. I could push-press the weight I GM, but it doesn't make sense to do the reps of cleans & push-presses if I don't have too (& if I don't want to be working my shoulders & legs that day).

Hey VLC - you actually listen to anything they say in M&F Hers? :-)

Olympic bar out of the rack, all the way baby! I do it Gladiola's way, as well - arched back, very slight bend in knees, ~45 degree bend over - maybe a little further on warmups to stretch my hammies.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Good Mornings. VLC, go ahead and start using the Olympic bar. I can't imagine those "fixed" barbells are that wide...over time that will be hell on your shoulders. Besides you used 70lbs...so the Olympic Bar should be no prob.

VLC, did you use narrow or wide? Bent or straight leg? Arched back or bent over? How far down did you go?

I did pretty much the same form as I do for straight leg deadlifts except the bar was across my upper back/shoulders. So legs no wider than shoulder width, knees slightly bent, and I went until my back was parallel to the ground. I did the reps very slowly. I am not sure what you mean by arched or bent over, but I think my answer is bent over.

and for a REALLY good time you can always try Hannibal's chain suspended good mornings with the bar 36" off the floor.

Hmmm. I tend to bend over really far b/c I can keep an arch in my back while bending pretty low (close to 90 degrees) But I'm sure that's also because my back has a lot of natural arch in it. Any danger to that? I'm thinking now that I give it a try with less of a bend and more weight.
