This is kind of long so bear with me.....

During Christmas my processor took a dump. It was a 2.8 ghtz. My nephew took my computer back with him and put a 2.0 ghtz but when he powered it on the system wouldn't let him get any further than the sign on screen to Windows XP Pro.

He did some checking and with the security of the operating system if you change out hardware the OS thinks there is a problem because the information it uses to start up doesn't match so it shuts down.

Now, he took all of my files and scanned them all for viruses and worms and whatnot and then zipped them all up and put them on his hard drive and I ordered a new 3.06 ghtz that was compatible with my motherboard blah blah blah.

He reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Pro and he also installed newer software that was running on my system before it went down...MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Cue CU2, Nero and Noton Systemworks 2006.

After everything was done he said it was running good. I get it home and plugged it up and it was running very very sluggish. It seemed all it wanted to do was run Norton all the time, scanning and checking things continuously nonstop.

I've talked with him several times and he is talking to other whizzes and that is how he is getting his information to tell me what to do. Now, he is smart with computers but I think this might go beyond his capabilities. Last night I finally decided to just remove Norton all together and see how things went.

Well, the system did get better but it is still sluggish. I use Mozilla and if I click on the icon to bring up the browser, it takes forever for it to load and the little hourglass thing comes up and sometimes the mouse sticks but after the hourglass thing disappears the mouse moves freely. Internet sites take forever to load and simple programs that I install take forever to install. Example: Logitec Wireless Keyboard and Mouse drivers took three hours to install.....that sucks!

It took me 10 hours to unistall Norton's last night!!!!

I know what the system is capable of doing but there must be something else within the system that is hogging RAM or something that is conflicting with the programs. I don't know enough about it to talk intelligently about it but I thought I would try here and see if anyone has suggestions on what to do.

Is there a program within my system that I can run to figure it out or is there a program I can download and it will troublehsoot my system? I am at a loss right now on what to do.

Any help (even it is to leave the internet forever) would help greatly.

Ah hell, it could be a few things...

1) Your hard drive might be shitting the bed. It's probably a newer one, so you might chck the SMART status:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Active-SMART.shtml

This will let ya know if it's dying.

2) Might want to run a check on the memory. Memtest86 will put it through a test and check for errors.

3) None of those two work... Maybe the powersupply is getting flakey. They do tend to go, especially if you have sloppy power in your area.

4) I f-ing hate Norton system works. That has nothing to do with your problem, just thought I'd let you know :)

5) I'm ASSuming you had a firewall and anti-virus on that puppy before you hooked it up to the interenet, right?

6) one way to test is to run Linux off a live-cd. It won't change your hard drive - it runs all off the CD. The reason - if Linux works fine and speedy, then your XP install is dicked.

7) Another option is to make sure that all the drivers for the motherboard were loaded.

8) Make sure the BIOS settings for ram/cpu are groovy

That should keep you busy for awhile :D

This is the main one. Since the 2.0ghz processor probably has a different bus speed then the 2.8ghz processor this should be checked. Also is the ram that installed in the computer supposed to work with the cpu installed? for instance if te ram is ddr2 , older processors are designed to work with regular ddr. DDR2 is not backwards compatible.

Ok Thanks jnuts. I will try this and see what happens.

Yea, Norton was hooked up and running while I was trying out the internet but it got so slow that I just got off of it to try and figure out what was going on with my system.

I appreciate the info and I will get back with you later.

Thanks again. :)

jnuts - what are the top 5 websites/diagnostic tools/computer monitor thingys that one should have to keep check on their system health and such?
