SHREDDED IN SEVEN

John Berardi, Ph.D, C.S.C.S., a former bodybuilding champ, shares the secret diet tricks that help bodybuilders get ripped before a contest. (Cauton: These steps require depriving the body of water and carbohidrate, so follow them only as directed, and only in the last week of the program)

7 days out:
Begin drinking lots of water - around 2 gallons a day (32 8-ounce cups!), but adjust 2-3 cups up or down for every 10 pounds you wegh above or below 220lbs. At the same time, add a few dashes of salt to your meals.

6 days out:
Cut your carbs - take in 50 or fewer grams of carbs for the next 3 days. Eat mainly protein and healthy fats, but dont skimp on vegetables. (You're still salting your food and drinking a lots of water)

3 days out:
Dramatically increase your "dry carbs" - eating potatoes, yams, and rice cakes every 2-3 hours. Limit your intake of anything prepared with water, such as vegetables, pasta and rice. (Keep drinking water, though; at this point, you're just slowly preparing your body for less water over the next two days) Stop salting your food today and avoid high-sodium foods - such as most canned products and pre-packaged meats. (Dont worry about your calorie or carb intake over the next 3 days)

2 days out:
The extra water and salt that you've been consuming have signaled the body to excrete more water now - much of which will come from under your skin, revealing the muscles beneath. Help it along with an over-the-counter diuretic like Taraxatone or Natural Water Balance. Use as directed on the label until the day of the event.

1 day out:
Limit your water to no more than a cup all day (This should be your entire fluid intake). You'll still be peeing a ton, and because you're not replacing the water (or the salt), your skin will be getting thinner and showing more muscle definition. Continue eating primarilly protein an dry carbs every 2-3 hours - ypu wont like it, but you'll like the results you get the next day. So tough it out.

The day of:
Limit your water and keep your sodium low, but eat anything else you like. You'll keep the chiseled look all day long.

Before going to your event, get your pump on by doing the following exercices in circuit fashion (one set of each, one after the other, without rest): pushups, chinups or lat pulldowns, squats, dips, and barbell curls. Do 10-15 reps foer each (the weight should be light). When you've finished circuit, rest as long as it takes to catch your breath, and repeat one or two more times for a total of 2-3 circuits. It's party time! See you on the beach...

I dont know if any of the girls tried this. Tell me. I know my husband did it and at the end of the 7th day he looked awsome - all his muscels were like poping out like crazy!!!

yeah...its standard contest prep..everyone does a carb deplete/load and water manipulation

But as we've discussed, lol, not all do exactly that way. But the basic concept is there. Other variations can include specific salt loading and also potassium loading. But to Shadow's statement, at 7 days out you really can't do anythign more to grow or cut muscle or fat. The only thing you have left to manipulate is how much subQ water you have, and I guess if you are retaining anything in your stomach (i.e. bloat).

It's also what body builders do and figure girls don't really need to do all the things body builders do.

Very valid point Ulter - -because figure came AFTER bodybuilding in the history & evolution of physique competition, many of the early competitors woudl go to BB trainers and say "train me for figure". So the trainers would take their BB approach and just not get as freaky w/ it. Figure girls usually run between 10-12% bf, softer look, still the 6-pack but less importance on the size, the proportion and the symmetry. The higher lever girls, i.e. national & pro level, you start to see really lean, hard, vascular but still not the size, the leanness & vascularity of BB. So the whole thing about pulling out as much water as possible and to fill out the muscles as much is just not as important. However the concept is still applied depending on the shape of the girls, because at the point of the last week pre-show, you just can't pull off any more fat or build more muscle, so you really only have water content to manipulate.
