How many of of you guys do the 5x5 program with your 5 rep max weight for all 5 sets? I was doing that routine last year before i went to afganistan and saw awesome progress on it over the span of 6 months ?

That would be overkill!

Are you planning on doing the intermediate/linear 5x5 or the Texas method 5x5?

Start 4 weeks out from your 5rm. Plan to move up 10 pounds each week in both squats and deads and 5 pounds each week in your presses. So if your Squat 5rm is 200 pounds start the first week with 160 for your work set of 5. This will allow you to work up to your maxes and progress over a period of time. If you jump right into your 5rm the progress will be slow.

It does sound like overkill but increasing my weight every set just makes me feel like I am not working hard enough. Maybe I will try that instead

Isnt there a 5x5 where dyou do 5 sets of the same weight and if you get it then move up, but the weight is obviously lower then your real 5rm because of fatigue?
I had a buddy that was strong as shit in the highschool days and he would hit it like that. It would usually be like 55543 and if he go 55555 he's add 10 pound next time around. He'd warm up fiest of course.

I've done it and really like it. Be careful doing 5x5 max sets of deads. Thats alot of volume. I agree about the ramping up not feeling like enough, but once the weights get heavy the 5x5 max can lead to injuries from fatigue. Use it wisely.

I did this with bench, and still kinda do it with smolov jr. I used to be doing 165 for 5 reps max, and I would do 5 sets of that. I would fail on like the 3rd set. It would go like this 5,5,4,3,3,3,2. So I would end up getting all 25 reps(+1). I didn't progress at all though over the whole summer. I've been lifting for 10 months and my bench stayed at like 200 until recently. I'm a huge fan of smolov jr just becuase it is lots of sets at your max weight which gets super challenging, but you are forced to progress. My max shot from a shaky 210 touch and go to a solid 2 second pause 235 first time I did the routine, and now I'm going for 255 after this second time I have done the routine.
