I've never found the lightening bolt spell to be that effective. Fireballs tend to get a better spread, and hit more targets, especially using old 2nd edition rules where it espands to encompase 33,000 cubic feet when it does not impact an open area. However, now it no longer does this in current 3.5 rules...instead it merely expands in a 20 ft radius burst, and does not displace the volume of objects within its area by expanding farther.
