When you say you are "cutting", are you doing this in preparation for an upcoming contest, or is it that you just want to permanently lower your bodyfat?
To me, they are two entirely different diets. A typical cutting diet, that involves lots of restriction (e.g. no dairy),
WILL get you leaner than you've ever been, but it (both the level of leanness and the diet itself) is NOT something you can maintain. The rebound is a bitch. Bodybuilders know this, and it just goes with the territory of competing. The aim of a cutting diet is to get super lean for contest
day.
On the other hand, to permanently lose bodyfat, it's important to eat a wide variety of healthy foods, while still keeping in mind overall calories, and the proportion of proteins, carbs, and fats. On this type of diet, I see nothing wrong with cottage cheese or fruit as long as you fit it into the overall equation. An excellent article and diet examples here:
