Cleans...

Ive never nailed my boobs (34Cs)-- but I have bruised up my shoulders pretty bad...you could also PM CoolColJ on Elites training board-- he posts alot of info on cleans.

Honestly, if you haven't hit your breasts, the bar is traveling too far away from your body. You need to keep that bar close to your body.

That's exactly what I thought JJ. It just the nature of the movement, like scraping the chins doing deads. So the options are what I already figured, suck it up or stop doing cleans.

I dont agree-- theres about a dozen gals at my gym that do cleans (ranging from flat-chested to BIG boobs) & Ive never seen them hit their chest...you might be going too heavy so your forms not right-- cuasing you to hit your chest.

Well, I learned from a strength coach and competitive OL lifter, and he spot checks my form quite frequently. He's the one who warned me when I started working with him I'd be nailing my chest from time to time.

If the bar travels too far in front of your body, you'll have to hop forward to get under it. You want the bar to travel up, not out.

I would say, if possible - find a coach. These are complex moves and fast - thus difficult to monitor oneself. And it takes a while to get it right. I'm still doing silly stuff, like not jumping wide enough - then I fall over backwards, although my weights are coming up nicely lately. My coach watches each and every lift and reminds me after every set of what I'm neglecting, or where I'm erring - invaluable feedback.

I agree that the bar needs to be as close to the body as possible, and it's normal to have it graze past the breasts some days, but I haven't been hitting my tits lately - I'm a B-C. Although I did manage to somehow "drop" the bar right across my thighs tonight - 135lbs feels quite heavy in that situation.

Thus - ALWAYS throw the bar AWAY from you when it's not gonna go.

JJ- I also learned from a comp. oly-lifter...my first 4 sessions we only cleaned a wood bar (weighs less than 5 lbs) to get the technique down. if your hitting your body (shins, boobs, top of quads, shoulders)--your form is breaking down somewhere (too much weight, your feet are too close together..etc).

same thing goes for deadlifters w/ bruised shins-- its bad form, not inherent side effect to the lift.

ok-- off my soap box now... LOL!!

I have to agree with JJ.

The bar literally has to drag up the body. You have to focus on keeping the elbows high and the bar close to the body when performing a clean or snatch.

Also, a key element to oly-lifts is acceleration. And to produce maximum acceleration, you have to reduce the distance of which the bar travels. That would mean a straight line - so, any deviation from that path would cause a slower lift. And that's not what you want in the Oly-lifts.
