Cardio vs. Breakfast

Seems there are a lot of different opinions in regards to this topic. Some people their morning cardio and then eat a large healthy breakfast, where others eat and then workout.

Wondering which one's correct.

I run before my big breakfast, simply because I am unable to workout right after I eat (hour-ish). My normal routine is to run and then when I get back, I wait approx 30~1 hour before I eat.

I can see the benefits of running after eating breakfast, it should give you a little more energy, but I cannot over look the fact that I might throw everything back up after a hard sprint.

What do you do?

What I do is, I wake up at seven every morning and do my cardio (on an empty stomach). Then, right after my cardio. I have a mrp. My second meal comes two hrs. later.

I have been taught to do cardio on an empty stomach in the am. It speeds up your metabolism.

What do you all suppose the body is using for energy when it's asked to run for extended periods after a ten hour fast? The fact is that you will burn as much muscle as fat, the very muscle tissue you need to burn fat. And that's if you take an MRP after or not..the damage is already done.

I read your response to the cardio thread on the training board as well as this one.

Very intersting. Maybe I need to do more reading because every where I hear, its cardio in the am, cardio in the am over and over again. I understand your point on you might need some food in your system. Why do so many say different?

So if I eat in the morning, is it still the worst time to do cardio? If so why? What I got out of your response on the training board was that it is the WORST time period.

The reason why AM/empty stomach cardio is so popular is because we are a "weight loss" focused society. And I grant you, nothing will take off weight quicker than am/empty stomach cardio. And just to clarify, the "empty stomach" aspect is really more important than the "morning" one. AM cardio is fine if you have breakfast an hour or two before.

Here are some problems I see with empty stomach cardio:

1. It is simply too catabolic. Fat loss is best achieved by weight training first, diet second, and cardio third...in order of importance.

2. Your weight will come back soon after you stop. What takes you three months to lose will come back in three weeks.

3. Most people run in the morning which is extremely hard on the knees.

4. Similar and less catabolic results can be acheived through post workout cardio.

dude...

you got it all wrong...

eating a big breakfast will NOT give you more energy during a following cardio session unless that cardio session is at least 2 hours post food intake.

i hope you're not under the illusion that the food you swallow is immediately converted into energy.

It makes since.

Now, in the long run I will definately want to keep as much muscle as possible. However, what would you do in my situation? I the next six weeks I want to get to the smallest size possible. (bridesmaid) Should I still go by what you are saying or would you say continue with my routine as follows.

50 min. of Tae Bo. in the am on an empty stomach. Four times a week.
Weights four times a week in the evening.
Monday: Chest/tri's
Tuesday: Back/bi's
Wednesday: Off
Thursday: Shoulders/calves
Friday: Legs
Saturday: Off
Sunday: Off

My diet is
Cal: 1500-1700
Pro: 190-200
Fat: 25-45
Carbs: 105-115

I eat 5 meals a day. Two being MRPs

If you could critique this. I would appriciate it.

I job in the AM on an empty stomach while cutting, and I think it works pretty good. I'm sure I lose muscle while I'm losing fat, but that is probably also in part due to my reduced diet during the time.
