Artificial Sweetners and low Carbing?

How bad for you are art. sweetners when doing a low carb diet? I was reading the back of a Splenda box, and noticed that it contained Dextrose, which is high on the GI Index listing. How can they claim no carbs but contain what is basically sugar? The same with sweet and low, which contains "Nutrative Dextrose", another fancy name for sugar. Do you guys avoid these when doing a low carb diet, or are they okay? I very insulin resistant, and react to even the slightest sugar in my system.

Artifical sweetners are dervided from real sugar - but do no contain enough to spike insulin. As far as blood sugar goes - you shouldn't have problems with elevated levels (especially using something like Splenda).

So it wont spike insulin levels, not even if you use it every day? I tend to use about 7 individual packets a day. On my oatmeal and in my tea. So I shouldn't have a problem with that amount? What about eating foods that contain large amounts of Splenda, or diet beverages that contain large amounts of it?

Some people are more sensitive than others - the only way to know for sure is to test yourself with a blood glucose meter.

Or look for other indications that you might be getting kicked out of ketosis (e.g., some people get bad breath during ketosis; or their urine has a strong smell - if these symptoms go away - you're likely being kicked out of a ketonic state). Not everyone has these symptoms though....you could always check with ketostix - although even those aren't 100% reliable. A blood glucose meter is the only sure bet for testing.

I wouldn't worry about seven packets of sweetner per day - that's really not much at all. Just watch out for too many diet drinks, etc., which can add up really quickly.

No, on my diet I'm not worried about getting into keto. I'm on about 100 carbs a day. I just dont want insulin spikes, so that everything I eat in a meal will be stored as fat, exactly what I'm trying to loose.

How could you get ANY insulin spike from an artificial sweetener?

It tastes sweet, but it's not metabolized as sugar by the body.

Your insulin might not spike but don't think that it won't rise ever so slightly. Using a little bit with your tea, coffee, oatmeal, etc. is perfectly fine for most people. The best thing you can do is consume a packet or 2 and test yourself (before and after with ketosticks) about 20 to 30 minutes afterwards and see if ketosis has changed.

In that case - you have absolutely nothing to worry about. And definitely don't be afraid of insulin - it can be your friend too!!

Insulin doesn't store everything that you eat as fat. It is also responsible for building muscle!! So yah, without insulin, you wouldn't be able to get buff!!

Some peolple even inject insulin to "push" amino acids into theuir muscles for more protein synthesis (though quite dangerous)
