are your wrist completely straight when you bench?

Liftbig- good point on the weak grip with a bent wrist.... Try gripping something with your wrist straight versus bent.... A HUGE difference....

It's ok for your hand to be bent back as long as the BAR is over your wrist. That means you can have your hand cocked back, but the bar has to be in the lower part of your palm so that your wrist, elbow, and the bar are all on the same plane. If the bar is on the back part of your palm, like by your callouses and the base of your fingers, you're asking for trouble.

Make sense?

That just made my day...did NOT know that....

If I use a closed grip I keep my wrists straight, with an open grip they bend back so the bar and sit in the groove of my palm in line with my wrists.

I just realized that I have no idea where the bar is in my hand when I bench press. I'm gonna have to pay attention to that next time.

I have the same problem.

What exercises would you suggest for strengthening the wrist itself?

Wrist curls are always popular. It may add to your confidence if your wrists feel stronger.

Be careful with the wraps though. I have a friend who always used them, and then he became dependent on them because his wrists stayed weak while his other muscles grew. He couldn't even workout without them after awhile.
