arching bad for back?

my last two bench workous have been killing my lower back. i have a really good arch but it hurts when i do it sometimes (mostly towards the beginning of the workout). it feels like something is crushing but as soon as i do it a few times, i dont feel it much

i remember the last time i went to the chiropractor that a lot of people over-arch after finishing the deadlift. like hyper-extending their lower back. he says this crushes the discs and creates problems

i dont want to keep doing this if its going to cause problems anytime soon
 
i think it depends on the degree of your arch. i think it can cuase problems, but i also think you can avoid these problems. the number one thing i make a priority now is flexability. i stretch 100x more now than i ever have, especcially the back and hamstrings. lots of back ailments are from very tight, inflexable hammys. i would also practice arching whenever your benching to find that place where you can get a good arch but it not hurt your back. im not talking some muscle soreness, or cramping, im talking HURT, if your getting a sharp pain in your back, i wouldnt arch that high. i think of it as a cost/benefit ratio. if i can arch this high, and cut off 4 inches from my bench with no pain, or arch one inch higher and cut off 5 inches from my bench but my back is killing me, i would arch just a little bit lower, and work on being able to push my belly up to the bar. one inch off my stroke isnt worth back surgery.

before you bench make sure to do a dynamic warmup to get blood pumping into the back. work youre whole core, low back, abs. even work your hip flexors, hamstrings. then do some general warmup stuff for upper body. after your blood is into the muscle you can do a light stretch of your low back, abs, and hip flexors. dont just hop on the bench and start arching real hard when your cold. take the extra 10 minutes to get to the gym early and do the warmup, it will help alot. everyone should be doing a dynamic warmup before every workout. and follow up the workout with a cool down of TOTAL body stretching.
