Anyone ever had back problems?

aka....

i know i said something before about your injury, but i just read your reply here about what the doc said about your lower back.

can you tell me what kind of doc you saw?

i ask because i went through some of the same torment. when i finally found a doc who dealt with athletes, he explained how the body works.

as i understand it, discs dont disintegrate. if repeated trauma is inflicted upon them, they will eventually self-fuse. this isnt necessarily a bad thing. the ortho told me my l4 and l5 would eventually fuse and that it (my body) would do a MUCH better job of it than surgery can do. and by the way, i could keep right on lifting. the worst that would happen was it would blow again :)

The ONLY reason for surgery (again as i understand it) is to alleviate unbearable pain or to stop compression of vital nerves (cauda equina syndrome). other than that, backs will heal themselves. AND they will heal themselves much better with exercise.

Now, that being said, i wonder again what doc told you you wouldnt walk? i would seek another opinion. you probably already have. i am just giving you some encouragement.

For the previous poster:

X Rays will NOT find Herniated/Bulging discs. MRIs are getting cheaper and easier. if you are claustrophobic, ask for a valium. they even have open MRIs but they dont see things as well.

Any Ortho worth his salt will order an MRI immediately if a herniated disc is suspect. In my experience, Internal medicine doctors and normal docs wont because 9/10 it probably wont be a blown disc and they dont want to get shit from insurance about ordering an expensive test. this ESPECIALLY applies if you are in an HMO.

enough ranting.... docs aren't all idiots... just most of them.

Solidj55, sorry to hear about your back injury. I have had a
couple of them. I discussed the hip/lower back injury in the
Cubanito17 back injury thread. I pulled a muscle that runs
from the hip to the lower back. When I did it, I was in a
bunch of pain. The doctor that I went to was a runner
so he understood the need to train. He told me to keep lifting
at about 50% of what I had been doing and work back up to
my 100% level over time. He also gave me some stretching
work for the injured area. I was back to full speed in a month
or so.

My first injury back injury happened about 2 years ago. I was
doing a bunch of squats on the Smith Machine. I moved to the
power rack and did a past parallel, free weight set of 5 at 315.
This was a big number then. Felt a little tension in my back.
When I got home, I went up three steps from the garage to
the utility room. When I hit the third step, I got a sharp pain
in my lower back. Felt like someone stuck a knife in me. I hit
the floor. I told my wife where the pain was and she went to
work on it. I stood up and again hit the floor. She was back
at work on the area where the pain was. I stood up the second
time and the pain was gone. It did not return. I was so worried
about it that I just about stopped squatting heavy until about
7 months ago.

Try not to worry too much about it. Your body will fix itself given
time and a good rehad plan.

Thanks for all of the replies guys its nice to know that people out there know how you feel from their experience. Also, thanks for the words of encouragement.

The Mann- Dude where the hell have you been lol?!?! I havent talked to you in years it seems like.

how the hell are ya man??????????????is training good besides your back problem??.....how's life over there man.........:wavey:

Well Mann lol, training WAS going good. I was hitting PR's on bench left and right. I didnt shirt up but I know I was over 400. My last bench day I hit 300x7, 315x4, 275x12. Oh well I shot that all to shit lol. I havent lifted in 2 weeks and 2 days. I am praying my back heals fast and that the doctor will release me tomorrow to lift. I will be going very light for a while if he lets me go back on Monday. I am even considering going back to a bodybuilding style workout and dropping my weight back down. Hell, if I cant lift big right now I might as well look good. Oh well, thats the breaks I guess. By the way, how is your training going?

it was my chiropractor/sports injury dr who said that and my regular dr who said basicly the same thing( to stop as i am wearing disc away)
they called it degenerative disc or arthritis

I can do most things but the compression of squats kills me for a couple of days after
