? about Spinning classes

I was persuaded to take up a spinning class this evening (1st one ever) and I am curious about a couple of things. First, since this is a very intense class, what would be the maximum # of times per week to do this w/o overtraining? Second, after the cooldown, the instructor had the class take a pulse. Mine was 22 beats for 10 second count. The instructor informed me that my pulse should not be any lower than 25 beats for a 10 second count. Is this correct? I had always thought (and been edumacated) that everyone has a different level when it comes to pulse, esp. w/a cooldown.

Any comments? Suggestions?

All I know about spin classes is that they kick my butt.

(probably not the feedback you were looking for... ;) )

Spin class will burn about 500 cal a class so limit it if you are afraid of losing weight/muscle. Everyone will cool down at different levels depending on how fit they are/ age and other factors so I think she might be a little off on that comment....Be careful of building a shelf butt lol.....my sister in law stoped becasue her bum got bigger

I have been able to spin 2-3 times a week without any major issues. I personally don't think it's any tougher than 30 minutes of HIIT. The intensity really depends on the instructor and with the bike resistance at your call, you also can control the level of the workout you get.

I used to take Spinning 2x a week with no issues + sometimes a 2-3 hour class on a weekend "special" day for fun.....No issues - good class but how easy/hard depended on who the instructor was.....

I also found using the bike seat with the hole cutout helped prevent the "numb" feeling "down there" and wearing padded bike shorts helped with the numb butt syndrome.....

LOVED spinning....miss it a lot....

I'd be hesitant to assign any specific number to something as general as a spinning class.

That said they are quite a difficult form of cardio that can be beneficial.

Just in case any of you spinning lovers are in the NYC area, or have plans to visit....I go to New York Health and Raquet and got Pablo Toribio as an instructor.....he actually just got a write-up in NY Times as best spinning instructor. He is off the chain. Just a heads up, you got to sign up and usually there is a thirty minute wait one hour prior to class starting.
