2011: Deadlifts, Grip and Presses

Anyone can develop a powerful grip, but hand size especially finger thickness almost always leads to superior gripping power. It's like when you shake a guys hand that has sausage fingers that probably has never worked out a day in his life and feels like he just put your hand in a fucking vice.

I remember one of my first chiropractors had an expensive hand dynamometer and I could close it for 168lbs of force the first time I ever tried it. I have medium size hands, but I had been working hard construction for years by that point and hadn't done any specific grip work. I remember training grip for about 2 months and could bend a cheap crescent wrench bare handed, but not a 60 penny nail with cloth. I worked up to a 130lbs 2.5" thick dumbell lift in that time frame.

But, I had had around 4 years of serious construction labor like shoveling, picking, moving wheel barrows and picking up chunks of concrete by that time so had abit of a jump start.

Even then my coach with zero specific grip training that was deadlifting around 750 at the time could crush my hand easily thanks to his naturally powerfully thick hands. Bastard, lol.

Anyhow, my point is that you are correct in being patient. Closing the #3 gripper is a feat to be very proud of let alone closing the #4 which ain't gonna happen without some majorly serious commitment over time.

Alot of guys almost get sidelined by their grip obsession. Having a powerful grip is awesome, but so long as my grip is strong enough to pick up any weight I deadlift I would rather squat 200lbs more or bench 150lbs more than the guy that can close a gripper # or 2 above me. Overall physical power is better than extreme hand strength imo, but grip strength is important to a degree.

Not that I don't enjoy watching vids of people bending or lifting crazy shit through sheer hand strength.

Grip strength and hand strength is extremely important for me. I learned to do suitcase deadlifts from this log. They're great.

I can close the 250 lbs Heavy grips and the COC #2 fairy easily. I'm struggling with the 300 lbs heavy grips (almost closed his 3/4 of the way) and the COC # 3 (can't move that yet...well, I can move it, but it's really negligable)

Thanks for the all the advice, guys. I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner...been very busy at work.

@ Ghetto: Yes, I see what you're saying. I am trying to be patient. I don't have large hands. I have very very ladylike artisitc hands which are thin with long fingers...It IS hard to close the CoC #1 lol...#3 is like miles and miles away!!! I don't think I'll ever get to that super human grip strength therefore I'm not worried about going into that category lol...I'll be fine and you're right: I'd much much rather have a strong grip to DL a house than anything else :D

@ Alcatraz: Suitcase Deadlifts are the shit. haha.

Overhead squats are awesome. Your balance and overall strength is definitely well balanced being able to overhead squat bodyweight.

I might be able to do a single with 185 right now, but it would be sketchy as fuck. Definitely no 250 without some work lol.

Nice! my current goal is 100x1 also. Weighted pull ups are probably one of my favorite lifts now. Also great work on the rdl's that must have been an quite a burn after all those reps

I'm gonna start working on chinups pretty soon. Due to my left bicep being cramping and being sore I haven't seriously trained my back in 2 months and I can tell. It looks small compared to what it what. Thank god for the isometric action from squats and presses.

Gonna work on hauling my ass up for sets of 5.

Ya man just doing sets of 5 at your bodyweight will be some hard work! If you could get up to 3x10 at your weight that would pretty strong

I always sucked at high reps on pullups and chinups.

When I was rock climbing I could do about 12 perfect pullups at around 178lbs, but a single with 70lbs np.

Then I'd see guys that could crank out 20 reps, but still didn't have a higher single rep pull.

Try doing sidewinder pullups bro. These will humble most anyone. I doubt they are called this, but I saw a very advanced rock climber doing these and they are insanely hard.

Basically doing a strictu pullup to your left hand, then while in the up position bring you body sideways and touch your chin to your right hand and then go back to the left and lower. That's 1 rep. Then pullup to your right hand and repeat the same process to your left and so on.

If you can do 10 of these without kipping, while keeping your body controlled you'll be a pretty strong sob.

At the time I think I could do about 5 not quite perfect reps like this because it's actually really hard to keep your body at the top position while moving laterally.

DEADLIFTS & ROPE PULL-UPS - Mesocycle 31 Week 2

Last night...

Deadlift Warm-ups:
Hip Mobility Drills
135 x 4
245 x 4
295 x 5
345 x 3
385 x 3
425 x 2

Deadlift Work Sets::
475 x 2
495 x 2
475 x 2
475 x 2
475 x 2
Average Weight = 479
Average Intensity = ~96%
Goal was to do 5 heavy doubles. Got the job done. So incase this has seemed chaotic, there's a 4 week Double/Triple alternation which I am doing. Last week was the first in which the goal was to hit 4 triples. I hit 465, 475, 470 and 470 making the average weight 470 (94%). The goal for this week was to hit 5 doubles. I got an average weight of 479 (96%). Next week I'll be going for 4 triples again but to beat the average weight and then week after that (Week 4) I'm gonna hit 5 doubles to beat this week's average weight. In any case, my working weight range has moved from the 425-465 range to 465-495. This is good.

Rope Pull-ups:
BW x 14
BW x 16
Total = 30 reps

Video:

Wow talk about some fantastic workouts! 50 reps in 4 sets of pull ups with bodyweight plus 25? 2 reps of 495 on deadlifts? A set of 14 then 16 on rope pull ups? Someone in ballin!

ahhahahahahhahahhahhahahahhahahhahahahhahahahahhahhahaha

It just means I've reached a new level and now I'll be at this level for a WHILE. Time to dig in and prepare for the long haul.

:)

nice work dude, i know your pull ups are weighted but it looks like u can pull with your lats more, and bring ur chest to the bar not ur chin, pack them lats and keep it tight,

solid work

Circuit Training - Mesocycle 31 Week 2

CONDITIONING Training - Mesocycle 31 Week 2

This happened on Wednesday. I had no time to train and I decided to do something stupid. Awesome. Not.

23 Minute Timed Superset:
Front Squats @ 225 lbs = 5 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 30 reps
Pull-ups @ 185 lbs BW = 11 + 10 + 10 + 8 + 8 + 7 + 5 + 3 + 8 = 70 reps

Got DESTROYED

DEADLIFT Training - Mesocycle 31 Week 3

295 x 5

Next week I will begin a run at SDT on this. The NB is going to be 475 x 3 x 2.

Video:
I have a video of me, Gopi and Kanishk...Dev and Lorelli will upload theirs separately but this one has the three of doing our pulls. Gopi started a NBV with 185 x 4 x 2. Kanishk did SDT Progression to hit 295 x 8 x 2. Devraj blasted through his old max by hitting 375 x 2 and Lorelli hit 205 x 3 x 2. Anyway, here's my video:

LOL. I tried an overhead squat couple workouts ago with 135.

I easily muscle snatched it, then slowly squatted down and lost my balance right around parallel and had to dump the bar.

haha

DEADLIFTS - Mesocycle 31 Week 4

So my training has been kinda erratic over the last couple of weeks. Too much work and other commitments. Well, things will settle down.

This past week was pretty crazy....Trained Deadlifts on Saturday. Devraj managed to hit 405x2 which is awesome. Lorelli and Gopi managed to hit Double Progression and I believe Lorelli pulled 215 and Gopi pulled 205x2. As for me...I set a New Base Weight.

On Tuesday Dev and I went for Kaizzad's BB comp. It's the first BB comp I've ever been to and to be honest, I only went for Kaizzad. If Kaizzad wasn't a bb'er I wouldn't give two shits about that entire sport. Kaizzad placed well at 2nd place in his weight class. He's making his bones and I am sure he'll get where he wants to be in the next 10 years.

In other exciting news, my boy Joe from Ground Up Strength successfully graduated to Purple Belt in his Krav Maga training. Fuckin' BADASS to say the LEAST!!!!! Check out his log here: Joe Weir Strength Journal: Training for Martial Arts - Ground Up Strength

On to the training....

Way to commit to your training amigo.

When you're really tired sometimes you need a day off. Sometimes you need to just go half throttle. Sometimes you just go hard period.

Keep on keepin on. Your lifts are steadily improving as time goes by man.

Beast mode coming.

This totally fell apart on me. I don't know why. It was strange....But, I decided to ditch the SDT Plan for today and just nail something heavy.

Video:

Improvisation bro.

While I don't believe the mantra some believe that you should just train totally instinctively I do think from time to time you just have to say fuck it and do what you want.

I won't be surprised if you hit a triple bodyweight deadlift one day bro.

Well, only 20% of my training is "planned" and this is one of those days when the plan failed so there really is no other choice other than to do what you feel instinctively.

3x BW would be cool. Benni hit a 1015 DL yesterday. So frigging awesome!!!

1015 is Superman status.

700 and up is probably demi-god.

Not sure when the weight transitions from demi-god to Superman status, but he passed it awhile ago. Maybe 900 and up Superman status?

For sure. My god...I saw the video and I was whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... He's hit 1035 in training though. Benni has destroyed ALL competition. Literally. KK will never get there and Andy's 1008 got shattered baaaaad. Very exciting. Even Orlando Green's 860 DL @ 220 is beyond badass.

I hope I reach demi-god status of 700...It'll happen if and when it has to happen :)

I dunno why you're having issues. It's working fine for me and view count is showing that people have watched the video. You should be able to view all of my vids, dude.

Thanks for the kind words. Let me know if the problem persists.

Hey Andy, what kind of mobility drills do YOU do before deadlifting. I'm not trying to foam roll or spend any longer than ten minutes. However anything advice would do me better than what I am doing now which is just push ups and BW squats.

Things are going okay....Hopefully they will improve soon. Going to make a career change in the near future.

I'm in love with your signature. I need to read something like that at this point in my life.

Career changes are good. Shit, you're still really young man you got lot's of options.

You're definitely making progress. Every now and then I check some of your old posts and I can see the steady progress. I keep reminding myself how light you are too. Pulling 515 convential at 180-185 is NICE.

P.S. Gopi is like babelicious broseph. Reminds me of the powerlifting chick that trained with us. She was really attractive and I had to make a conscious effort not to constantly ogle her lol. Tell me I'm not the only one!:theshadow

I have noticed this is your fifth time mentioning that chick who always does the squats in andy's vids, and ya, shes a looker.

haha 5th time mike is keeping on track of things. Fantastic work on the 515 deadlift too and good luck with whatever career changes you may make.

Thanks buddy :)

HAHAHAHA

Thanks for the wishes, guys.

I haven't decided what it is that I do want to do but I do know that I don't want to do: I do not want to be a corporate slave.

I think you have to enjoy one of the three variables to any job: the money, the people you work with or the work you actually do. Right now I hate all three. I am definitely NOT cut out for this. Ironically, I'm getting promoted to mid-management at the end of this month so it's ironic that I'm good at a job I detest lol..

Ghetto: thank you for the kind words: I am young and that is why I want to explore other avenues. Now, the problem is: I need to figure out what these avenues are! hahahha
