what freebie computer programs are a Must Have for general maintenance?

deepfreeze is the shit - it costs though.
You can set up your computer exactly how you want it and freeze it in that state. Everytime you restart your computer it goes back to where you froze it. You can set areas and drives not to reset if you need to save stuff.

i have had computers that had soo many probs on them that the System Restore didnt work and neither did Norton GoBack.
You can get deep freeze off a torrent for free - not legal

kernal issues with frequent system restore.

If my computer is FUBAR I will just reformat - I've done it enough times to where I love having a fresh copy of windows on my computer. This, however, is not an option for non-tech saavy people or those who get irritated easily.

Use firefox and 80% of your problems will go away. I dont even use adaware anymore because I dont get adaware.

I dont have anti-virus software either cause its fucken annoying and a big system resource hog. I dont think Norton ever succesfully got rid of a virus either  AVG free is the one I recommend however, its solid and its free.

I have Vista installed on one of my computers. Its pretty cool so far except for finding a suitable wireless card with suitable drivers has been a bitch....one is currently in the mail.

one can buy dvd's of conference where leading security experts talk to network admins from around the world - about how to secure their computers and networks.

Some may be over your head - but some of it is damn good info and even some ridiculously easy stuff (quick, show of hands, how many know if printer/file sharing is on in your computer. or if remote access connection is enabled).
