Tricep Dips: Parallel Bar Dip vs. Bench Dip???

I used to do tris after chest & they would be so dead after chest & 2 other tri exercises, that by the time I finshed with dips, I could do a bench dip with my feet on another bench & easily hit failure in 10 reps.

Now that I"m doing them after bis, I could kick out 10 reps with a 45 lb plate on my lap! It seems to me it might be absurd to start putting multiple plates on my lap.

But... regular dips, I just don't feel as much! Must be my form - I try, but it doesn't feel like as much of a tri isolation as the bench dips. Any reason parallel bar dips are better???

IMO, bar dips are better for two reasons: one, your legs support much of your weight with bench dips, and two, bench dips make it very difficult to keep correct form. In other words, it's to easy to let the elbows flare out.

And I agree, what's the point of putting all that weight on your lap when you can do regular dips with much less hassle? To better isolate your tris on bar dips, make sure your body is perpendicular to the floor, do not lean forward! Also, be sure to keep the elbows in tight. If this is still too easy for you, get a weight belt with a chain on it and add some weight.

Exactly what gymtime said, bar dips are great for adding tri thickness and when you go heavy, also help increase lock out strength for bench

bench dips are good for people starting out. i used them to warm up my tris today. once you get good at bar dips, there is no need to go back to bench dips.

i agree, bar dips are good for lock outs. ive always done bar dips and i have zero problem with the lock out. i have one guy who cant even do 3 dips, and he cant seem to lock out any press i have him do.....go figure. so guess where he just started.....bench dipping.

I seem to get an amazing bump doing bnench dips. I put my feet on another bench or the weight rack( yes im one of those assholes)

For the bars do you guys lean foward more to hit the tris or stay straight? I've tried both ways and i can't seem to isolate them and get a nice pump.

if you stick with the bench dips just keep piling on the plates. 3 45's will sit comfortably and that should be plenty of additional weight if you are doing them with decent form.

if you go with the bar dips make a consciuos effort to keep your elbows back, similar to the position they would be in when bench dipping. Big tri's will come...
