Trailer for James Cameron's Avatar

This movie would not be possible without cgi. Lol I suppose that means he just should never have even bothered. I've never understood the automatic disdain for technical effects, especially when they're representing a setting and characters that are out of this world, so to speak. Hell damn near everybody loved Terminator 2 and that was obviously cgi, and in a real-world setting no less.
This will be the most pristine looking thing anyone has seen on a screen pre-12/18 and it's built around groundbreaking 3D tech to back it up. Expecting a Quicktime trailer to do this movie justice is like eating a frozen pizza expecting it to taste homemade.

Its just kinda dissapointing seeing as how District 9, no matter what you thought of the film, was able to create some of the most photorealistic CGI aliens Ive probably ever seen. On a budget of $30 million.

Avatar's budget has gone past $350 million already.

avatar has lots matte painters, character artists, compositors, sound composers, etc.

District 9 really wasn't that involved. Just a team to build the alien and another to composite. the movie is primarily live action with some aliens thrown in some scenes. Avatar is 100x more complex and requires many companies in the mix.

Doesnt change the fact that the effects in District 9 appear to be years ahead of those in the Avatar trailer.

But, like I said, the movie was meant to be seen in 3D so perhaps we have to wait until then to judge.

District 9 looks realistic. Avatar looks like shit (so far) but I won't pass judgment until I see it.

Indeed. James Cameron hasn't made a bad movie, so it's easy to hold out hope.

Very true. A good friend of mine lived in New Zealand for 3 years or so a while back b/c her husband worked for one of the CGI houses and they were doing it in NZ. Be Damned if I can remember what movie it was anymore, but he got very well paid and he was just one of about a zillion CGI grunts on that film.

That's probably because all three Lord Of The Rings films were made there and they need to get a lot of stuff done. I don't imagine it will stay that way unless other complex films decide to locate in NZ as well.

So, this is kinda OT, but I've always been interested in knowing which franchise (as a whole, so get out your statistical aids if you have them), Terminator or Alien, would everyone consider the best? IMO, I prefer Alien...each had their own vibe and I loved them all. I still haven't seen the 4th Terminator. Loved Cameron's but HATED the third one so that brings the average waaaay down. LOL

Alien 1 = Brilliant.

Alien 2 = Perhaps surpasses Alien 1. Best pure action movie of all time.

Alien 3 = Fincher's first, very atmospheric and still extremely entertaining.

Alien 4 = Bleh.

Ridley Scott is making a prequel to Alien, FYI. Should be in theaters in 2-3 years.

You must also take into consideration when the first Alien movie came out. It is a masterpiece.

Terminator I was very good, especially for a low budget flick.

I also love Alien II just because of the Marines. Some of the scenes in that movie are awesome.
