Stupid Bench press

Ok so I go to the gym today to press 175 for 5x5 right. So I warm up with 155 for 2x8. Hit 175 and I can only make 1 rep at a time so I'm sitting there at 175 for 1 rep for like 15 minutes. How the hell is this possible that I can do 1 rep at a time but not make a 5x5? This happen to anyone else?

I agree with CCJ. Lower your warmup weight and reps.

I personally prefer warmup reps of 5, but 3 would work just as well.

Agreed. You are definately doing to much work as a warm up. If you want to do a set of 8, you can 1x8 of something like 115-125, just to get the blood flowing. 2x8 of 155 is unnecessary and way to close to your working set weight. I did 3x5 of 335 this week and the only did 135 for 1x8, every other warmup was between 4-6.

Warmups are only used to get the blood flowing, not to tax the muscle...

You might want to drop the warmup to 100lbs or so...maybe a simple set of push ups. I usually hit about 10 push ups, followed by a 135 warm up. My working sets are 205+.

The weights are too heavy bro. Be sure to include light warmups, then get to the heavy stuff when you arrive at your building sets.
