The idea of using straps when doing shrugs is that you're grip strength won't fatigue before your traps do. The straps wrap around your wrists and around the dumbbell handle so your wrist takes a bit of the weight and its not all up to your grip strength. The only problem using straps is that your grip strength will suffer. Its kinda like the powerlifting belt controversy.
You can do them as a supplement to shrugs, but a better way is to do them on a smith machine and put the bar behind your neck and lift your traps t your neck. They are kind of hard to perfom, but it can be worth trying.
Hey Oak, thanks for the tip on kneeling shrugs. I tried them last night and they are not too bad. Kinda had people staring at me whilest on my knees though (wondering what they were thinkin, huh).
Anyway, I will incorporate this new exercise to my workout.
