Serious thread bitches, I am at my wits end

46...in retrospect, what with my family history of joint issues, football, rugby, motocross, skateboarding and mogul-bashing probably weren't the smartest endeavors for me...hindsight is 20/20 :whatever:

Hold out if you can. At that age, you'd have to do at least one revision if not two. Revisions suck.

ohhhhh, i am! my knee pain and flexibility has improved significantly over the last couple of years even though i have no articular cartilage left in either of them or on the back of either of my knee caps...my ortho said that might happen (i.e., improvement...the body has a funny way of adapting/coping). and my hips? meh...they look (mri) a LOT worse than they feel. i feel pretty blessed to be honest...it's been over 5 years since my knees received their death sentence, and they feel and fucntion way better now than they did then :)

I'd be glad to help you.

Where is your pain? Lower or upper back? Do you know specifically which vertebra are involved (i.e. L1-L2)?

Do you have any loss of function, or is it purely pain? Does it hurt at specific times (i.e. going from sitting to standing) or does it hurt continuously? Does warming up help with the pain? If you lay-off your back for 2-3 days, does it get any better?

Are you taking any anti-inflammatories? Do they help at all? I'm sure the painkillers work on the pain, but I'm sure they wear off quickly -- correct?

Do you have an MRI or CT you can send me? I'm guessing you've got a bulging or blown disc. I can have a number of experts in the field read your images if you'll send them my way.

Has anyone in this thread already recommended a tens unit? They really work. My mom has had progressive back issues for most of her adult life and a good tens unit really helped her pain issues tremendously.

I have a tens unit, but I must admitt I haven't used it as I should, but it does seem to work.

I would check out the Laser Spine Institute Laser Back Surgery Experts | Herniated Disc | Spinal Stenosis Treatment. My dad had (2) bulging discs similar to yours to which his whole left leg was slowly dying off, he also was in excruciating pain. Living up in Canada the wait time to see a Spinal Surgeon was close to 1 year. I said fuck and it and started researching alternate treatments. I found out about this clinic (they have one in Florida and in Phoenix), sent them his MRI and they told us to come on down. It cost him 20 g's, but basically he went in to the clinic in a wheelchair and walked out. Since then my Grandma, mother and a few other people have gone down on my recommendation and all have had great results. The procedure is such that a laser is used to perforate the affected disc(s) and somehow shrinks/modifies where it slips back to place. The clinics are are pretty high tech and the staff are great to work with. If you have any more questions let me know.

Ack! I should have mentioned that.

There are some negative studies on TENS (some studies say they don't work), but some patients and doctors swear by them.

Plunkey I am gonna send out that MRI today. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out and give me another opinion.
